Maintenance To The Water-In-Fuel Sensor Probes Due To Possible Fuel Contamination

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 5.9L - 24V DIESEL ENGINE.

DISCUSSION:

The probes on the end of the Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor may become less effective at sensing the presence of water in the fuel if they are exposed to contaminated fuel. Contaminant from the fuel may insulate the WIF sensor probes and inhibit the WIF lamp from illuminating when water is present.

Any time service is performed on the fuel filter or fuel filter housing, the probes on the end of the Water-In-Fuel sensor should be cleaned. Use a clean cloth to wipe the WIF probes of any contaminant (Figure 1).

Two designs of the fuel filter housing have been placed in service. Though the designs are different, cleaning the WIF sensor probes remain basically the same.
