Ignition System - Misfire DTC's Set/Engine Misfire

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 18-006-05, DATED JANUARY 31, 2005, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE REVISIONS TO THE PROCEDURE.

SUBJECT:
Cylinder Misfire/Ignition Coil Malfunction

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing seals on the ignition coils.

MODELS:

2004 - 2005 (HB) Durango

NOTE:
This Bulletin Applies To Vehicle Equipped with 3.7 L and 4.7 L Engines (Sales Code EVA/EKG) built before Dec. 06, 2004 (MDH 1206XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:








An ignition misfire condition may be present. This is accompanied by one or more of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's):

DIAGNOSIS:

If any of the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DIG's) are present, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove all of the ignition coils from engine.

2. **Inspect the ignition coils for any signs that water has been present on the coils below the 0-ring. Look for rust stains on the tip of the ignition coil.**

3. **Using compressed air, blow out the spark plug wells and inspect for the presence of water in the wells.**

4. Based on the specific DTC encountered, remove the spark plug from that cylinder. If DTC - P0300 Multiple cylinder misfire is present, all of the spark plugs must be removed.

5. **Inspect the remaining spark pug wells for any sign that water has been present in the spark plug well. Look for excessive corrosion or deposits in that area.**

6. **If there are any signs that water has been present in the spark plug wells, on the spark plugs or on the ignition coils, the spark plug and ignition coil must be replaced for that cylinder.**





7. Obtain a new ignition coil for the specific cylinder/cylinders, pin 56028318AF. Inspect the new ignition coil for the presence of the seal (Fig. 1). If no seal is present, install a seal, p/n 05174214AA on the new ignition coil just above the 0-ring flange as shown. (Fig. 1).

8. **Install the spark plugs (Torque 27 Nm (20 Ft. Lbs.)) and ignition coils (Torque - 8 Nm (70 In.Lbs.)) for the effected cylinders.**

9. Install a new seal, p/n 05174214AA on the remainder of the ignition coils that were not replaced.

10. Install the remainder of the ignition coils.
