Heated Glass Element Switch: Description and Operation

The rear window defogger switch (2) is integrated into the A/C-heater control (1) which is mounted to the center of the instrument panel. The rear window defogger switch and the rear window defogger LED indicator (3) cannot be repaired and, if faulty or damaged, the A/C-heater control must be replaced.

An LED indicator will illuminate when the rear window defogger control switch is activated. When the control switch is activated, the A/C-heater control requests the front control module (FCM) to operated the rear window defogger (EBL) relay via the controller area network (CAN) B bus. The EBL relay controls the current flow to the grids of the rear window defogger and to the heated power side view mirrors, when equipped. The EBL relay will be on for approximately 15 minutes or until the control switch or the ignition switch is turned off.
