THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-003-06, DATED JANUARY 21, 2006, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE A CHANGE TO THE MODELS.

SUBJECT:
Flash: Long Crank When Starting And/Or Transmission Shift And Battery Charging Enhancements

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM - Cummins) with new software.

MODELS:

2005 - 2006 (DH/D1) Ram Truck (Heavy Duty)

NOTE:
** This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 5.9L turbo-diesel engine (sales code ETH) built on or after January 01, 2005 (MDH 0101Xx). **

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

This flash also provides the following enhancements:

a. Improved start times for manual transmission vehicles. The customer may experience an intermittent long engine crank time prior to engine start. This condition may occur when the engine is cold or hot. The engine may crank over for up to 3 seconds before it starts to run.

b. Shift quality improvements for automatic transmission vehicles.

c. Engine fan is activated if the coolant temperature sensor fails for all vehicles.

d. Enhanced battery charging strategy for all vehicles.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using a Scan Tool (StarSCAN(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs are present record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.

If the vehicle operator describes or experiences the Symptom/Condition, perform the Repair Procedure.
