Removal and Installation

REAR AXLE - 8 1/4

REMOVAL





1. With vehicle in neutral, position on hoist.
2. Position a lift under axle and secure axle to lift.
3. Remove the wheels and rear brake components.
4. Remove ABS sensor (5) from the differential housing.
5. Disconnect the brake hose at the axle junction block.
6. Disconnect the vent hose from the axle shaft tube.
7. Mark the propeller shaft and companion flange for installation alignment reference.
8. Remove propeller shaft.





9. Remove shock absorbers (3) axle mounting (2) bolts (1).





10. Remove stabilizer bar (1) retainer clamp bolts (3) and retainer clamps (2) from the axle.





11. Remove spring clamps nuts (2) and spring plates (4).
12. Remove the axle from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION





1. Raise axle with lifting device and align to the leaf spring centering bolts.
2. Install spring clamps (1) and spring plates (4). Tighten the U-bolt nuts (2) to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).





3. Install shock absorbers (3) and tighten nuts (2) to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).





4. Install ABS sensor (5) into the differential housing.





5. Install rear brake and park brake components.
6. Connect brake hose to axle junction block.
7. Install stabilizer bar and center it with equal spacing on both sides. Tighten retainer clamp (2) bolts (3) to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).
8. Install axle vent hose.
9. Install propeller shaft with reference marks aligned. Tighten bolts to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).
10. Add gear lubricant, if necessary.
