Diagnostic Test

1. DTC PRESENT

With the scan tool, record and erase DTC's.
Turn the ignition off, wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition on.
Operate the Power Liftgate several times from stop to stop if possible.
With the scan tool, read ACTIVE DTCs.

Q: Does the scan tool display B196C-POWER LIFTGATE CLOSE DIRECTION EXCESSIVE POSITION SENSOR COUNTS?

YES: Go To 2
NO: Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors for an intermittent condition. Operate the liftgate several times and check for any binding conditions. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test

2. BINDING LIFTGATE

Examine the liftgate for proper alignment, worn or binding hinges, weak liftgate prop assembly, loose/hard weatherstrip, for wear or anything that would cause an obstruction to proper operation.

If necessary manually operate the power liftgate on a known good vehicle and notice the effort needed to open and close for comparison.

Q: Were there any mechanical problems found?

YES: Refer to Service information for the related symptom(s). Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
NO: Go To 3

3. POWER LIFTGATE MODULE - POSITION SENSE OPEN

Operate the liftgate from the full closed position and put an obstacle in it's path to make it reverse.

Q: Did the liftgate reverse back to the closed position?

YES: Go To 4
NO: Replace the Power Liftgate Module. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test

4. (Z918) GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN

Turn the ignition off.
Turn all lights off.
Disconnect the Power Liftgate Drive Unit connector.
Measure the resistance of the (Z918) Ground circuit to ground.
Wiggle the harness and check for an intermittent open condition.

Q: Is the resistance below 2.0 ohms?

YES: Go To 5
NO: Repair the (Z918) Ground circuit for an open. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test

5. (Q901) LOGIC GROUND OPEN

Measure the resistance between the (Z918) Ground and the (Q901) Logic Ground circuit in the Drive Unit connector.
Wiggle the harness and check for an intermittent open condition.

Q: Is the resistance below 2.0 ohms?

YES: Go To 6
NO: Repair the (Q901) Logic Ground circuit for an open. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test

6. (Q201) LIFTGATE CLUTCH DRIVER WIRE OPEN

Disconnect the Power Liftgate Module C1 connector.
Measure the resistance of the (Q201) Liftgate Clutch Driver circuit between the Power Liftgate Drive Unit connector and the Power Liftgate Module C1 connector.

Q: Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?

YES: Replace the Liftgate Drive Unit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
NO: Repair the (Q201) Liftgate Clutch Driver wire for an open. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. Body Verification Test
