P0689

P0689-AUTO SHUTDOWN RELAY SENSE CIRCUIT LOW

P0689-Auto Shutdown Relay Sense Circuit Low:

WHEN MONITORED:
Ignition on. Battery voltage between 9 and 16 volts and the ASD Relay is powered on.

SET CONDITION:
The ASD Output circuit voltage drops below an acceptable value at the FCM. The circuit is continuously monitored.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- (A922) Fused B+ circuits
- (A955) ASD relay output circuit open
- (A955) ASD relay output circuit shorted to ground
- ASD relay
- FCM

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding.

Diagnostic Test

1. ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: P0685 and P0688 ASD Relay Control circuit DTCs must be diagnosed before continuing.

Ignition on, engine not running.
With a scan tool read DTCs.

Q: Is the DTC active at this time?

YES: Go To 2
NO: Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Diagnostic Procedure. Component Tests and General Diagnostics
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test

2. (A922) FUSED B+ CIRCUITS

Turn the ignition off.
Remove the ASD Relay from the IPM.
Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the (A922) Fused B+ circuits in the IPM.

Q: Does the test light illuminate brightly?

YES: Go To 3
NO: Repair the open or short to ground in the (A922) Fused B+ circuits. Inspect the related fuse and repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test

3. (A955) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN

Disconnect the IPM FCM 49-way harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the (A955) ASD Relay Output circuit from the Relay terminal to the IPM FCM 49-way harness connector.

Q: Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?

YES: Go To 4
NO: Repair the open in the (A955) ASD Relay Output circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test

4. (A955) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

Measure the resistance between ground and the (A955) ASD Relay Output circuit at the Relay terminals.

Q: Is the resistance below 100 ohms?

YES: Repair the short to ground in the (A955) ASD Relay Control circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
NO: Go To 5

5. ASD RELAY

Measure the resistance of the ASD Relay Coil between terminals 86 and 85.

Q: Is the resistance between 60 and 80 ohms?

YES: Go To 6
NO: Replace the ASD Relay. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test

6. PCM

NOTE: Before continuing, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.

Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all Power and Ground circuits.

Q: Were there any problems found?

YES: Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
NO: Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
