SUBJECT:

FLASH: Rear Power Liftgate Fails To Open

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Power Liftgate Control Module (PLGM) with new software.

MODELS:

2006 (HB) Durango

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a power liftgate built prior to June 19, 2006 (MDH 0619XX).

When the key fob button or overhead console switch is depressed, to actuate the opening of the rear power liftgate, the liftgate may open for only a few inches and then return to its closed position.

The following PLGM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) may be present:

B1956 - Power Liftgate Latch Release - Excessive Time

B1969 - Power Liftgate Open Direction - Excessive Position Sensor Count

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Unlock and manually open the rear liftgate to its fully open position.

2. Connect a StarSCAN(R) scan tool to the vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC).

3. Power up the StarSCAN(R).

4. From the Home screen, select the "ECU View" screen.

5. Select "PLGM - Power Liftgate Module".

6. Select "Data Display" from the PLGM screen.

7. Scroll down the screen to "Gate Position Counts"

8. Read the value for the "Gate Position Counts".

9. Is the "Gate Position Counts" value greater than or equal to 65,000?

a. If YES >>> Then perform the Repair Procedure.

b. If NO >>> Then further diagnosis is required.

SPECIAL TOOLS / EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE - USING THE INTERNET TO RETRIEVE THE FLASH FILE:

NOTE:
Before performing this Repair Procedure, the operating software in the StarSCAN(R); must be programmed with software release level 6.06 or higher. The software release level is visible in the blue header at the top of the StarSCAN(R) screen.

NOTE:
The StarSCAN(R) diagnostic scan tool fully supports Internet connectivity. However, to take advantage of this feature you must first configure the StarSCAN(R) for your dealership's network. Make sure the StarSCAN is configured to the dealership's network before proceeding. For instruction on setting up your StarSCAN(R) for the dealer's network refer to either:

"DealerCONNECT > Service > StarSCAN and StarMOBILE tools > Online Documentation", or refer to the StarSCAN(R) Quick Start Networking Guide. The StarSCAN(R) Quick Start Networking Guide is also available on the website under the "Download Center".

NOTE:
If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash should be restarted.

1. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.5 volts. Set the battery charger to continuous charge. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Remove the charger from the battery when the flash process is complete.

2. Connect the CH9410 StarSCAN(R) ethernet cable to the StarSCAN(R) and the dealer's network drop.

3. Connect the CH9404 StarSCAN(R) vehicle cable to the StarSCAN(R) and the vehicle.

4. Power ON the StarSCAN(R).

5. Retrieve the old PLGM part number. Using the StarSCAN(R) at the "Home" screen:

a. Select "ECU View"

b. Touch the screen to highlight the PLGM in the list of modules.

c. Select "More Options"

d. Select "ECU Flash"

e. Record the part number at the top of the "Flash PLGM" screen for later reference.

f. Select "Browse for New File". Follow the on screen instructions.

g. Select "Download to Scantool".

h. Select "Close" after the download is complete, then select "Back".

i. Highlight the listed PLGM calibration.

j. Select "Update Controller". Follow on screen instructions.

k. When the PLGM update is complete, select "OK".

l. Verify the part number at the top of the "Flash PLGM" screen has updated to the new PLGM part number.

6. Cycle the ignition key.

NOTE:
The vehicle should be at room temperature (greater than 18°C or 65°F) prior to performing a Power Liftgate Learn Cycle. If the vehicle temperature is too cold, then the liftgate may fail to fully open on its own due to lower assist from the liftgate struts. Ensure that the liftgate is able to open fully.

7. Using the StarSCAN(R), perform the "Power Liftgate Learn Cycle" to relearn the liftgate limits into the power liftgate control module. For detailed service procedures refer to DealerCONNECT > Service Info tab > 8 - Electrical > Power Doors > Standard Procedure > Power Liftgate Learn Cycle. The steps involved are as follows:

a. With the StarSCAN(R), check for any power liftgate system stored trouble codes.

b. Correct and erase any stored codes.

c. Close the liftgate.

d. With the StarSCAN(R), select the Power Liftgate Module (PLGM) menu, More Options, System Tests, and then select the Open Door Test.

e. With the StarSCAN(R), check "routine status" for a pass or fail message. If the Open Door Test did not pass, the scan tool will display the reason to aid in system diagnosis or rerunning the Open Door Test routine.

f. With the StarSCAN(R), select the Power Liftgate Module (PLGM) menu, More Options, System Tests, and then select the Close Door Test.

g. With the StarSCAN(R), check "routine status" for a pass or fail message. If the Close Door Test did not pass, the scan tool will display the reason to aid in system diagnosis or rerunning the Close Door Test routine.

h. Follow the instructions on the scan tool to complete the test.

i. The liftgate learn cycle is complete.

NOTE:
Due to the PLGM programming procedure, a DTC may be set in other modules (PCM, TCM, BCM, MIC, SKREEM, etc.) within the vehicle, if so equipped. Some DTC's may cause the MIL to illuminate. From the "Home" screen select "System View". Then select "All DTCs". Press "Clear All Stored DTCs" if there are any DTCs shown on the list.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
