Disassembly
MANUAL TRANSMISSION - T56DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove shift cover bolts and remove shift cover.
2. Remove roll pin from rear offset lever (3) with a hammer (1) and punch (2).
3. Remove offset lever (1) from tail housing (2).
4. Remove two tail housing nuts (2) from top of the transmission tail housing (3).
5. Remove six tail housing (1) bolts (2).
6. Pry tail housing (1) off case at pry points (2) (4) only.
7. Remove mainshaft (3) roller bearing snap ring, roller bearing (4) and spacers (2).
8. Remove reverse gear (1) snap ring (4) and thrust washer (2) from mainshaft.
9. Remove reverse gear (3), bearing (5), wave washer (2) and brass reverse bracket ring (1) from mainshaft (4).
10. Tap reverse synchronizer (3) on mainshaft (2) to relieve pressure on snap ring and remove snap ring.
11. Remove reverse shift fork (1) snap ring (2) with snap ring pliers (3) and discard snap ring.
12. Remove reverse synchronizer (1) sleeve snap ring (2).
13. Remove shift fork (1) and synchronizer (2) sleeve as an assembly.
14. Remove 5-6 gear shift fork (1) snap ring (2).
15. Remove reverse gear (1) from countershaft with three jaw puller (2).
16. Remove fifth gear (1) snap ring (2) from countershaft.
17. Remove fifth gear (1) thrust washer (2) from countershaft.
18. Remove fifth gear (1) and bearing from countershaft (2).
19. Remove 5-6 gear (1) from mainshaft with Puller 9379 (2), Bolts 9378 and Bridge 9382.
20. Remove shift fork (1) and 5-6 synchronizer sleeve (2).
21. Remove 5-6 synchronizer snap ring and synchronizer hub (1) from countershaft (2).
22. Remove sixth gear synchronizer stop ring (1) from countershaft (2).
23. Remove sixth gear (1), bearing and thrust washer from countershaft (2).
24. Remove top cover plate (2) bolts and pry off cover.
25. Remove shift detent (1) assembly
26. Drive roll pin down with punch (1) into front offset lever (3) until loose.
27. Remove reverse lockout solenoid
28. Separate offset lever and guide plate to remove the roll pin that was driven down.
29. Remove two torx screws (2) located on the top of the transmission case (1).
30. Remove clutch slave cylinder from transmission.
31. Remove all front adapter plate (2) bolts (3) except one to hold the front adapter in place.
32. Stand transmission on Fixture 9387 and bolt adapter to fixture.
33. Install on bench Fixture 9385.
34. Remove remaining adapter bolt and pry transmission case (1) upward. Remove offset lever from shift rail and case from adapter plate (2).
35. Remove reverse rail (2) assembly.
36. Tilt countershaft (4) sideways and lift mainshaft (1) and shift rail a (2) assemblies out of adapter plate (3).
37. Remove countershaft (1) assembly.
38. Remove input shaft (2) from adapter (3).
MAINSHAFT
NOTE: Mainshaft snap rings are not interchangeable.
1. Remove and discard mainshaft (2) O-ring (3).
2. Remove rear mainshaft (2) bearing (1).
3. Remove first gear (1) and bearing (2) from mainshaft.
4. Remove 1-2 synchronizer (1) snap ring (2) from mainshaft.
5. Remove 1-2 thrust washer (1) and bracket ring assembly from mainshaft.
6. Press second gear (3) and synchronizer (2) hub off mainshaft (1) with Splitter 9375 (4).
7. Remove 3-4 synchronizer (1) snap ring (2).
8. Press third gear (1), 3-4 synchronizer (2) hub and sleeve off mainshaft with Splitter 9375 (3).
9. Remove third gear bearing (2) and spacer (1) from mainshaft.
10. Remove mainshaft tapered bearing (1) with bearing Splitter 9386 (2) and press.
COUNTERSHAFT
1. Remove countershaft adapter plate bearing (2) with Splitter 9388 (1) and Press Adapter 9377 (3).
2. Remove countershaft (1) housing bearing (2) with Splitter 9384 (3) and a press.
INPUT SHAFT
1. Remove input shaft (1) bearing (2) with Splitter 9384 (3) and a press.
2. Remove input shaft bearing cup (2) with Remover 9381 (1) and Slide Hammer C3752.
EXTENSION HOUSING
1. Remove idler gear bracket bolts (2) and bracket.
2. Remove thrust washer, gear (3) and bearing (2) from tail housing (1).
3. Remove gear shaft.
4. Remove mainshaft bearing race (1) snap ring (2).
5. Remove mainshaft race (2) with Remove 7794A (1) and Slide Hammer C637.
6. Remove countershaft bearing plastic bearing cage (2) and remove roller bearings (3).
7. Remove countershaft bearing race (1) with Remover 9395 (2) and Slide Hammer C637.
8. Remove shift rail bushings with Remover 9367 (1) and Slide Hammer C3752 (2).
TRANSMISSION CASE
1. Remove shift rail bushings with Remover 9367 and Slide Hammer C3752.
39. Remove countershaft bearing cups with Remover 9369 (1) and Handle C4171(2).
40. Remove mainshaft bearing cups with Remover 9369 (2) and Handle C4171(1).
41. Remove offset lever guide plate.
TRANSMISSION ADAPTER
1. Remove shift rail bushings (2) with Remover 9367 (3) and Slide Hammer C3752 (1).
2. Remove countershaft and mainshaft bearing cups and select shims.
3. Remove input shaft seal.
