Overhaul (Gear-Pinion/Ring
GEAR PINION/RING
REMOVAL
NOTE: The ring and pinion gears are service as a matched set. Never replace ring gear without replacing the matched pinion gear.
1. Remove differential from housing.
2. Place differential case (1) in a vise with soft metal jaw protectors.
3. Remove bolts holding ring gear to differential case.
4. Drive ring gear (2) from the differential case (1) with a soft hammer (3).
5. Remove exciter ring from the differential case by slowly tapping the ring with a brass drift.
6. Hold yoke with Holder 6719A and remove pinion yoke nut and washer.
7. Remove pinion yoke (2) with Puller C452 (3) and Wrench C3281 (1).
8. Remove pinion gear from housing with a soft hammer (1).
9. Remove pinion seal with a slide hammer or suitable pry bar.
10. Remove oil slinger (1) and front pinion bearing from housing (2).
11. Remove front pinion bearing cup with Remover D158 (1) and Handle C4171(2).
12. Remove rear bearing cup with Remover D162 (1) and Handle C4171 (2).
13. Remove pinion preload shims (1) from pinion shaft (2).
14. Remove rear pinion bearing with Puller/Press C293PA (1) and Adapters C29337 (3).
15. Remove pinion depth shims (2) from pinion shaft (1) and record shim thickness.
INSTALLATION
1. Install rear pinion bearing cup with Installer D111 (1) and Handle C4171 (2).
2. Install front pinion bearing cup with Installer D146 (1) and Handle C4171 (2).
3. Install front pinion bearing (1) into housing (2).
4. Install oil slinger (1) into housing (2).
5. Apply a light coating of gear lubricant on the lip of pinion seal. Install new pinion seal (1) with Installer 9348 (2).
6. Install pinion depth shim (2) on pinion gear shaft
7. Install rear pinion bearing (2) on pinion gear with Installer 9679 (1) and a press.
8. Install pinion preload shims (1) on pinion shaft (2).
9. Install pinion gear in housing.
10. Install yoke (1) with Installer C3718 (2).
11. Install yoke (2) washer (1) on pinion.
12. Install new pinion nut (1).
13. Tighten pinion nut with Holder 6719A to 292 Nm (215 ft. lbs.) minimum. Do not overtighten. Maximum torque is 447 Nm (330 ft. lbs.).
14. Tighten pinion nut with Holder 6719A and a torque wrench set at 447 Nm (330 ft. lbs.). Slowly tighten the nut in 6.8 Nm (5 ft. lbs.) increments until the pinion Torque To Rotate is achieved. Measure pinion Torque To Rotate with an inch pound torque wrench (1) frequently.
15. Pinion Torque To Rotate is:
^ Original Bearings - 1 to 3 Nm (10 to 20 inch lbs.)
^ New Bearings - 1.7 to 3.9 Nm (15 to 35 inch lbs.)
16. Invert differential case in the vise.
17. Position exciter ring on differential case slowly and evenly tap the exciter ring into position with a brass drift.
18. Install ring gear (3) and start two ring gear bolts (2) to provide case-to-ring gear bolt hole alignment.
19. 1 Invert differential case in the vise.
20. Install new ring gear bolts and alternately tighten to 177 Nm (130 ft. lbs.).
CAUTION: Never reuse ring gear bolts. Failure to follow these instructions can fracture bolts causing damage.
21. Install differential into housing and verify backlash and gear contact pattern.
22. Measure Total Torque to Rotate with an inch pound torque wrench. This measurement is pinion Torque To Rotate plus 0.33 to 0.56 Nm (3 to 5 inch lbs.).
