SUBJECT:
Transponder Key Programming Procedure **Using DealerCONNECT**
MODELS:
2002 - 2006 (VA) Sprinter
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
DISCUSSION:
Sprinter vehicles are equipped with a theft deterrent system requiring the Sentry Key Remote Entry Electronic Module (SKREEM) and transponder key be linked using a security code. The transponder key contains an individual code (with the exception of certain fleet vehicles) that is read by the SKREEM when the vehicle's ignition switch is turned on. When the SKREEM recognizes the code as being valid for the vehicle, it allows the vehicle to start.
When replacing or adding a key, the SKREEM must be programmed to recognize the new key. This programming procedure involves the use of a protected dynamic code, which will be generated individually every time a key is programmed. The coding information used for programming is ** now available on DealerCONNECT.**
There are two possible procedures when programming the SKREEM. The appropriate procedure has to be chosen with regard to the situation as follows.
"Learn Transponder Key" - Adding / Replacing Keys (up to 8 total)
This procedure adds an additional transponder code to the ones currently held within the SKREEM. This procedure should be selected if the customer wants to have one or more additional spare keys or if the original key is broken and will be replaced with a new one. The SKREEM module is able to handle a maximum of 8 different transponder codes at one time.
CAUTION:
If the maximum (8) transponder codes are currently programmed, all transponder codes must be erased before learning a new one or the SKREEM will lock up and will need to be replaced. (see next procedure).
"Erase All Keys, Learn New One" - Lost or Stolen Key / Max Level Reached
This procedure erases all transponder codes from the SKREEM allowing subsequent keys to be programmed. After this process, keys which are not reprogrammed cannot be used to start the vehicle any longer. Thus the customer will need to bring in all remaining keys for programming. This procedure should only be used if a key was lost or stolen and must be used if no further transponder codes can be added to the SKREEM (Max Level Reached).
NOTE:
The transponder key programming forms are available on DealerConnect under efiles>Service>Sprinter Information>Technical References. For Canadian dealers, the forms are available on DealerConnect under eFiles>Service>Dealer Technical Support>e-Documents.
TRANSPONDER KEY LEARNING PROCEDURE WITH DRBIII(R):
CAUTION:
Vehicle must be at the location of key programming procedure.
CAUTION:
Follow the instructions of the DRBIII(R) until the very end. Do not cycle the key or switch off the ignition unless instructed by the DRBIII(R). Do not unplug the DRBIII(R) until the procedure is complete.
CAUTION:
Start key programming procedure with a key that is already programmed to start the vehicle (original key).
1. Open the hood, install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.5 volts.
2. Using the DRBIII(R) from the Main Menu select:
a. Memory Card
b. System Select
c. Theft Alarm
d. Remote Keyless Entry (SKREEM)
e. Module Display
f. Miscellaneous Function
g. Learn Transponder Key. Follow on screen instructions.
3. The DRBIII(R) will display the Random Number, SKREEM ID code, Calculation Type, Number of keys and Transponder Code. **Record all these figures as well as the VIN on a sheet of paper for later reference. (See note below).**
NOTE:
Use the sheets available on DealerCONNECT under: eFiles>Service>Fleet and Commercial Vehicles>Sprinter VA>Technical References>Sprinter Key Programming Procedure, to record this information. For Canadian Dealers, use the sheets available on DealerCONNECT under: eFiles>Service>Dealer Technical Support>e-Documents.
4. **GO to DealerCONNECT>Service>Repair>Sprinter Key Programming and fill in the requested information. **
NOTE:
Calling the Technical Support Tech Hotline is no longer required.
CAUTION:
DO NOT disconnect the DRBIII(R) or cycle the key as this will interrupt the procedure.
5. **Click on Submit and the system will return the 12 digit Coding String. **
6. Enter the 12 digit "Coding String" number into the DRBIII(R) per instructions (3 digits at a time, press "ENTER" after each set of digits). Follow the on-screen instructions.
7. When the DRBIII(R) displays "Key has been successfully programmed"; repeat Step # 2 through Step # 6 if a second or third key (up to seven keys may be programmed) needs to be programmed.
CAUTION:
You MUST wait 3 minutes before programming the next key.
NOTE:
All original keys must be reprogrammed if the "Erase All Keys, Learn New One" procedure has been performed.
