P0689
P0689-AUTO SHUTDOWN RELAY SENSE CIRCUIT LOW
For a complete wiring diagram Consult Diagrams/Electrical.
- When Monitored:
Ignition on. Battery voltage between 9 and 16 volts and the ASD Relay is powered on.
- Set Condition:
The ASD Output circuit voltage drops below an acceptable value at the FCM. The circuit is continuously monitored.
Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview.
Diagnostic Test
1. ACTIVE DTC
NOTE: P0685 and P0688 ASD Relay Control circuit DTCs must be diagnosed before continuing.
Ignition on, engine not running.
With a scan too, select View DTCs.
Is the DTC Active at this time?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Diagnostic Procedure. Intermittent Condition
2. INTERNAL FUSED B+ CIRCUITS
Turn the ignition off.
Remove the ASD Relay from the IPM.
Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the Internal Fused B+ circuits in the IPM.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Repair the open or short to ground in the Internal Fused B+ circuits. Inspect the related fuse and repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
3. (A955) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN
Disconnect the C4 IPM harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the (A955) ASD Relay Output circuit from the Relay terminal to the C4 IPM harness connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair the open in the (A955) ASD Relay Output circuit, replace the IPM.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
4. (A955) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
Measure the resistance between ground and the (A955) ASD Relay Output circuit at the Relay terminals.
Is the resistance below 100 ohms?
Yes
- Repair the short to ground in the (A955) ASD Relay Control circuit, replace the IPM.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
No
- Go To 5
5. ASD RELAY
Measure the resistance of the ASD Relay Coil between terminals 86 and 85.
Is the resistance between 60 and 80 ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Replace the ASD Relay.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
6. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the ASD Relay, Front Control Module, and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the ASD Relay, Front Control Module, and Powertrain Control Module connectors.
Search for any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Powertrain Verification Test
