DESCRIPTION
A multi-function indicator is standard equipment on all instrument clusters. On vehicles not equipped with the optional steering wheel buttons, the multi-function indicator consists of a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) unit and four push button-controlled switches that are soldered onto the instrument cluster electronic circuit board. On vehicles equipped with the optional steering wheel buttons, there are two multi-function indicator dot matrix display units, four push button-controlled switches that are soldered onto the instrument cluster electronic circuit board and two dual-action rocker switches mounted to each side of the driver airbag trim cover in the steering wheel. These displays are soldered onto the cluster electronic circuit board and are visible through a window located near the center of the instrument cluster, between the analog speedometer and the tachometer.
Two cluster mounted switch push buttons extend through the cluster lens at each outboard side of the cluster. The four multi-function indicator push buttons allow the vehicle operator to configure and adjust several of the display features. The two push buttons on the right side of the cluster are labeled + (plus) and - (minus), while the lower button on the left side of the cluster is labeled 0 (Zero or Reset). On vehicles not equipped with the optional steering wheel buttons, the upper push button on the left side of the cluster is labeled M (Menu). On vehicles equipped with the optional steering wheel buttons, the upper push button on the left side of the cluster is labeled with an icon representing two oil droplets and is used to bring up a display showing the engine oil level.
The multi-function indicator display units each display both alpha-numeric characters, bar graphs and numerous icons to provide information to the vehicle operator. The indications of the multi-function indicators are not visible when the display units are not illuminated. On vehicles not equipped with the optional steering wheel buttons, when illuminated the indications appear as dark characters and icons silhouetted against a lighted field. On vehicles equipped with the optional steering wheel buttons, when illuminated the indications appear as light characters and icons silhouetted against a dark field. When the exterior lighting is turned OFF, the display is illuminated at maximum brightness. When the exterior lighting is turned ON the display illumination level can be adjusted in concert with the cluster general illumination lighting using the + (plus) and - (minus) multi-function indicator push buttons.
The multi-function indicator display units and push button switches are serviced as a unit with the instrument cluster.
