Variable Induction Control Valve: Description and Operation

OPERATION

The 3.5L gas engine is equipped with an intake manifold flow control valve to adjust the length of the intake manifold runners. The valve is vacuum actuated by a solenoid, which is controlled by the PCM. At engine speeds below 3500 RPM, with the engine under a moderate load, the valve is normally open. This causes the intake manifold runners to be long and slightly restricted, which increases the velocity of air flowing into the cylinders, and provides high torque. At engine speeds above 3500 RPM, the valve is normally closed, which causes the length of the intake manifold runners to be short and less restricted, which allows a higher volume of air to flow into the cylinders.
