Body - Quarter Panel Corrosion Above Tail Lamps

SUBJECT:
Rust And Or Corrosion On Quarter Panel Above Taillamp.
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves removing rust and sealing the void by applying sealant.
MODELS:
2008 (VB) Sprinter Wagon and Van (2500)
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to wagon and van models built between September 6, 2007 (MDH 0906XX) and June 08, 2008 (MDH 0608XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicles may exhibit a void on the quarter panel(s) above the taillamp(s). Further investigation by the technician may find the sealant is missing with a possibility of corrosion in the void.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the customer describes the Symptom/Condition, perform the Repair Procedure. Check both quarter panels for this condition. Two procedures are available depending on the severity of the condition. Repair Procedure "A" is for conditions that do not have rust but are missing sealant. Repair Procedure "B" is for conditions that have rust with missing sealant.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE "A" APPLYING SEALANT:
1. Clean with Mopar Car Wash Concentrate, and water.
2. Dry thoroughly.
3. Wipe with wax and grease remover.
4. Inspect for rust in the areas shown in (Fig 1).
5. If rust has been identified refer to procedure "B otherwise continue.
6. Remove Taillamp. Remove Lower Splash Shield. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service info > Electrical > Lamps and Lighting > Lamps/Lighting Exterior > Lamp, Turn Stop Turn> Removal > Lamp- VAN AND WAGON.
7. Mask off the void as close to the edge as possible.
8. Sand the void lightly with a Red Scuff Pad or equivalent.
9. Clean with Wax and Grease Remover
10. Apply Sika 221 - Sealant, Black, 3M #08609 Urethane, Windshield or equivalent per manufacturers recommendations (Fig 1)
11. Remove masking tape.
12. Install Taillamp. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerConnect> TechCONNECT under: Service info> Electrical> Lamps and Lighting> Lamps/Lighting Exterior> Lamp, Turn Stop Turn> Removal> Lamp- VAN AND WAGON.
REPAIR PROCEDURE "B" REMOVING RUST AND APPLYING SEALANT:
1. Clean with Mopar Car Wash Concentrate, and water.
2. Dry thoroughly.
3. Wipe with wax and grease remover.
4. Inspect for rust in the areas shown in (Fig. 1).
5. Remove Taillamp. Remove Lower Splash Shield. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service info > Electrical > Lamps and Lighting > Lamps/Lighting Exterior > Lamp, Turn Stop Turn > Removal > Lamp- VAN AND WAGON.
6. If the corrosion extends under the sealant, remove sealant to a point which is 2" beyond any corrosion.
7. Mask off the void as close to the edge as possible.
8. Remove rust using 220 grit sandpaper.
9. Apply IES Rust Raider # 1840 or equivalent.
10. Light scuff with Red Scuff Pad or equivalent.
11. Remove sanded or torn masking tape.
12. Apply new masking tape in the same location.
13. Coat all bare metal with a corrosion resistant primer per manufacturers recommendations.
14. Lightly sand per paint manufacturers recommendations.
15. Spot prime with primer surfacer per manufacturers recommendations.
16. Light scuff with Red Scuff Pad or equivalent.
WARNING:
If the rust expands beyond the void you must refinish the area per paint manufacturers recommendations.
17. Apply Sika 221 - Sealant, Black, 3M # 08609 Urethane, Windshield or equivalent per manufacturers recommendations (Fig. 1).
18. Remove masking tape.
19. Install Taillamp. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service info > Electrical > Lamps and Lighting > Lamps/Lighting Exterior > Lamp, Turn Stop Turn > Removal > Lamp- VAN AND WAGON.
