Body - Sliding Door Binding When Fully Open

SUBJECT:
Sliding Door Binding When Fully Opened

OVERVIEW:
This involves inspecting the right and/or left sliding door operation and if necessary connecting the sliding door latch cable to the interior door handle, replacing the interior sliding door handle and/or adjusting the sliding door latch position.

MODELS:
2009 - 2010 (RT) Town & Country/Grand Caravan

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built before August, 05, 2010 (MDH0805XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience the sliding door binding on the right and/or left side striker when in the full open position and closing from the inside handle. This will require higher efforts to release the hold open latch to close the door.

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Open the right and/or left sliding door to the full open position. Does the sliding door stay in the full open (latched) position or is excessive force required to close the door using the interior door handle?

a. Yes >>> Proceed to the repair procedure.

b. No >>> Further diagnosis required, this bulletin does not apply.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the interior sliding door trim panel. Refer to the detailed removal procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 23-Body > Interior > Doors - Sliding > Panel, Door Trim > Removal.

2. Was the latch cable connected to the interior door handle?

a. Yes >>> Proceed to Step # 4

b. No >>> Re-secure the latch cable and verify the sliding door stays in the full open (latched) position. Did the door stay in the fully (latched) open position?

3. Did the door stay in the fully (latched) open position?

a. Yes >>> Install the interior sliding door trim panel. Refer to the detailed Installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 23-Body > Interior > Doors - Sliding > Panel, Door Trim> Install. Return the vehicle to the customer.

b. No >>> Proceed to Step # 4.

4. Inspect the interior door handle. Was it broken?

a. Yes >>> Replace the broken interior door handle and verify the sliding door stays in the full open (latched) position.

b. No >>> Proceed to Step # 6.

5. Did the door stay in the fully (latched) open position?

a. Yes >>> Install the interior sliding door trim panel. Refer to the detailed Installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > : Service Info > 23-Body > Interior > Doors - Sliding > Panel, Door Trim > Install. Return the vehicle to the customer

b. No >>> Install the interior sliding door trim panel. Refer to the detailed Installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 23-Body > Interior > Doors - Sliding > Panel, Door Trim > Install. Proceed to Step # 6.

6. Remove the sliding door scuff plate on the right and/or left side. Refer to the detailed removal procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 23-Body > Interior > PLATE, Scuff, Sliding Door> Removal.

7. Remove the bolts shown in (Fig. 2) number 1 to slightly lower the latch bracket.

8. Stack two washers and install them between the floor and the latch bracket at each bolt location (Fig. 2) number 2.

9. Re-install the latch bracket bolts and verify the sliding door will latch in the full open position by opening and closing the door 5 times.

10. Re-install the sliding door scuff plate. Refer to the detailed installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT >TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 23-Body > Interior > PLATE, Scuff, Sliding Door > Installation.

11. Return the vehicle to the customer
