Flash: MIL Illumination And/Or MDS Driveability Improvements And/Or Difficulty Running

The Catalyst Monitor

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software.

MODELS:

2009 (DS) Ram Truck (1500)

2009 (DH) Ram Trucks (1500/2500)

2009 (DC) Cab Chassis (3500)

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to models equipped with a 5.7L engine (Sales code EZC, EZD or EZH).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customers may experience:

a. A MIL illumination for the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), refer to the MIL Ilumination section.

b. The vehicle has a harsh engagement or has a buck/jerking feeling, refer to the Driveability Improvement section.

c. Catalyst Monitor Readiness difficult to set under some driving conditions (EZD and EZH engines)

Upon further investigation the Technician may also find that P1521 - Incorrect Engine Oil Type has been set on EZH engines only.

MIL Ilumination:

1. P0016 - Crankshaft/Camshaft Timing Misalignment - Bank 1 Sensor 1 (EZD engines)

2. PO13A - 02 Sensor 1/2 Slow Response - Rich to Lean (EZD and EZC engines)

3. P01 3C - 02 Sensor 2/2 Slow Response - Rich to Lean (EZD and EZC engines)

4. P2096 - Downstream Fuel Trim System 1 Lean (EZD and EZC engines)

5. P2098 - Downstream Fuel Trim System 2 Lean (EZD and EZC engines)

6. P2097 - Downstream Fuel Trim System 1 Rich (EZD and EZC engines)

7. P2099 - Downstream Fuel Trim System 2 Rich (EZD and EZC engines)

8. P0524 - MDS Oil pressure rationality (EZD engines)

9. P2610 - PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance (EZD, EZH and EZC engines)

Driveability Improvement for EZD and EZH engines:

MDS transitions have been enhanced from V8 to V4 and V4 to V8 in all ambient temperatures and operating ranges. These enhancements were made to make the transition less noticeable to the customer.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH(TM) or StarSCAN(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTC's are present other then the ones listed above record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.

If the above condition is present, perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash should be restarted.

1. Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT, Refer To Group 8 - Electrical > Electronic Control Modules - Service Information > Module - Powertrain Control > Standard Procedures > PCM/ECM Programming - Gas. After PCM reprogramming, the following must be performed:

a. Clear any DTC's that may have been set in other modules due to reprogramming. The wiTECH application will automatically present all DTCs after the flash and allow the tech to clear them.

2. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label and attach it near the VECI label.
