B1B54-00-1ST ROW PASSENGER SEAT BELT SENSOR-WIRES SHORTED TOGETHER
Special Tools:
For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.
Theory of Operation
When powered, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) sends a test current to the belt switches to verify the integrity of the switch and wiring. The use of the SRS Load Tool Adapter provides a test point, as well as a method for opening the shorting bar connections within the harness connector. (8443-57)
- When Monitored:
The ORC monitors the status of the seat belt switch circuits at power up and every 50 ms thereafter while the ignition is in on.
- Set Condition:
This DTC sets when the ORC detects the (R58) Seat Belt Switch Sense circuit is shorted to ground or the seat belt switch become shorted together for more than five seconds. This DTC transitions from active to stored when the module sees a recovery from the shorted together condition for greater than five seconds.
Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Restraint System Pre-Diagnostic Procedure.
Diagnostic Test
1. DETERMINE ACTIVE OR STORED DTC
NOTE: Make sure the battery is fully charged.
1. Turn the ignition on.
2. With the scan tool, read all active ORC DTCs.
Is the DTC active or stored?
ACTIVE DTC
- Go To 2
STORED DTC
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Restraint System Intermittent Condition Test.
2. CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL ACTIVE SENSOR DTCS
1. With the scan tool, read all active ORC DTCs.
Are DTCs B2734-13-PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTION SENSOR-CIRCUIT OPEN active?
Yes
- Replace or repair the (R730) Passenger Detection Return circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraint System Verification Test.
No
- Go To 3
3. CHECK (R58) PASSENGER SEAT BELT SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
1. Disconnect the Passenger Seat Belt-Buckle Tensioner/Switch connector.
2. Disconnect the Passenger Occupant Detection Sensor and Passenger Seat Track Position Sensor connectors.
3. Disconnect the ORC C1 and C2 connectors.
NOTE: Check the connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
4. Connect the SRS Load Tool Adapter to the ORC C1 and C2 connectors. (8443-57)
5. Measure the resistance of the (R58) Passenger Seat Belt Switch Sense circuit between the SRS Load Tool Adapter cavity C2-20 and ground
Is the resistance below 5k Ohms?
Yes
NOTE: If the short is found in the Seat Harness, do not attempt to repair the Seat Harness. Replace the Seat Harness.
- Repair or replace the (R58) Passenger Seat Belt Switch Sense circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraint System Verification Test.
No
- Go To 4
4. CHECK (R730) PASSENGER SEAT DETECTION RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Measure the resistance of the (R30) Passenger Seat Detection Return circuit between the SRS Load Tool Adapter cavity C2-19 and ground
Is the resistance below 5k Ohms?
Yes
NOTE: If the short is found in the Seat Harness, do not attempt to repair the Seat Harness. Replace the Seat Harness.
- Repair or replace the (R730) Passenger Seat Detection Return circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraint System Verification Test.
No
- Go To 5
5. CHECK (R58) PASSENGER SEAT BELT SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO (R730) PASSENGER SEAT DETECTION RETURN CIRCUIT
1. Measure the resistance between the (R58) Passenger Seat Belt Switch Sense circuit and the (R730) Passenger Seat Detection Return circuit at the SRS Load Tool Adapter cavity C2-20 and C2-19. (8443-57)
Is the resistance below 5k Ohms?
Yes
NOTE: If the short is found in the Seat Harness, do not attempt to repair the Seat Harness. Replace the Seat Harness.
- Repair or replace the (R58) Passenger Seat Belt Switch Sense circuit for a short to the (R730) Passenger Detection Return circuit.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraint System Verification Test.
No
- Go To 6
6. CHECK OPERATION OF PASSENGER SEAT BELT SWITCH
1. Replace the Passenger Seat Belt Switch.
2. Reconnect the ORC C1 and C2 connectors.
WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
3. Connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector - use the most current software available.
4. Use the scan tool and erase all codes in the ORC.
5. Perform ORC module reset. Access the Miscellaneous Function menu from the ORC ECU Overview screen on the scan tool to perform this operation.
6. Wait one minute, and read active codes.
Did the active B1B54-00-1ST ROW PASSENGER SEAT BELT SENSOR-WIRES SHORTED TOGETHER DTC return?
Yes
WARNING:
If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions can result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
