Integrated Key FOB Transmitter - Operation

OPERATION

Special Tools:

The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter fob with integrated key incorporates many useful functions into a single, compact unit. The integrated key portion of the transmitter mechanically operates the mechanical ignition switch and door lock cylinders. At the same time, the transducer on the internal circuit board of the transmitter uses low frequency Radio Frequency (RF) communication to ensure vehicle security through an electronic validation or handshake process that is performed with the Body Control Module (BCM) each time the engine is started.

When any one of the RKE buttons of the transmitter is depressed, the transmitter generates a high frequency RF request signal that is received and validated by the BCM. If the BCM determines the RF signal was generated by a transmitter that is valid for the vehicle, it generates the necessary outputs to invoke the functions or features associated with the request. The mechanical key of the RKE transmitter fob also provides emergency access to the vehicle in case the battery in the vehicle or the transmitter becomes discharged.

Each vehicle owner is provided with a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) by the dealer at the time of vehicle purchase. This number is required along with a diagnostic scan tool for the dealer to program an additional or replacement RKE transmitter into the BCM. The key included with a new additional or replacement transmitter must also be cut to match the coding of the lock cylinders in the vehicle.

Diagnosis of a RKE transmitter requires the use of a Radio Frequency Detector such as special tool #(9001). Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.
