Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Adjustments

ADJUSTMENTS

Measure and adjust differential side bearing preload during any transaxle service, especially when the following components are replaced:

- Ring Gear
- Differential case
- Differential bearings

1. Remove the left side bearing plate and existing shim from the case.

Position a dial indicator (2) with a minimum stroke range of 13mm. Measure and record the distance between the sealing surface of the bearing plate as shown. Use the average of three readings in separate locations.
2. Position the transaxle with bellhousing facing down on workbench and secure with C-clamps or the equivalent. Position a dial indicator with a minimum stroke range of 13mm. Measure and record the distance between the surface of the case and the outer edge of the differential side bearing race. Use the average of three readings in separate locations.

3. Position a dial indicator (2) with a minimum stroke range of 13mm. Measure and record the distance between the sealing surface of the bearing plate as shown. Use the average of three readings in separate locations.
4. The shim required for proper bearing preload is the difference of these two measurements plus 0.12mm (0.005 in.). Never combine shims to obtain the required preload.
5. Install the correct shim.
6. Install the bearing plate and tighten the bolts to 23 Nm (17 lb. ft.).
