B012C-2F-PASSENGER EARLY CRASH SENSOR - SIGNAL ERRATIC

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The front right impact sensor (early crash sensor) is mounted in the engine compartment behind the front lamp unit. Restraints - Description. The front impact sensor is directly hard wired to the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) Module. The impact sensors perform their own self test using power supplied by the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) then communicate this status back to the ORC with periodic updates. The repair of this fault condition involves verifying the integrity of the wiring between the ORC and the sensor.

- When Monitored:
With the ignition on, the Front Right Impact Sensor is equipped with on board diagnostics to monitor to sensor's internal circuits. If a problem is identified, the sensor sends the Front Right Impact Sensor Internal message to the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC).

- Set Condition:
This code will set, if the ORC and the Front Right Impact Sensor do not establish and maintain valid data communications. The DTC will become Active after the fault has set for a minimum of 2.5 seconds. The DTC will go to Stored after the ORC to Front Right Impact Sensor communication fault has been removed or the suspect sensor has been replaced for 2.5 seconds. The Multifunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will set in the instrument cluster.

1.

NOTE: If the scan tool shows this DTC has a Stored history of setting then the front right impact sensor is to be replaced.
DETERMINE ACTIVE OR STORED FAULT CODE

NOTE: Make sure the battery is fully charged.

1. With the scan tool, read the active ORC DTCs.

Is DTC B012C-2F-PASSENGER EARLY CRASH SENSOR - SIGNAL ERRATIC active?

Yes

- WARNING: Turn the ignition off disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

- NOTE: Inspect the related wiring harness for chafed, pierced, pinched, and partially broken wires. Also, inspect the related connectors for broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals. Repair as necessary. Recheck for active DTC B012C-2F-PASSENGER EARLY CRASH SENSOR - SIGNAL ERRATIC. If still active go to 2 If DTC B012C-2F-PASSENGER EARLY CRASH SENSOR - SIGNAL ERRATIC is stored repair is complete. Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraints System Verification Test .

No

- Test for an intermittent condition. Perform the Restraints System Intermittent Test. Restraints System Intermittent Condition Test.

2. VERIFY OPERATION OF THE FRONT RIGHT IMPACT SENSOR

WARNING: Turn the ignition off disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

1. Replace the Front Right Impact Sensor. Front.
2. Reconnect the vehicle wire harness to the sensor.
3. Remove any special tools or jumper wires and reconnect all previously disconnected components - except the Battery.

WARNING: Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

4. Use the scan tool and erase the stored codes in all airbag system modules.
5. Turn the Ignition Off, and wait 15 seconds before turning the Ignition On.
6. Wait one minute, and read active codes.

Did the active DTC: B012C-2F-PASSENGER EARLY CRASH SENSOR - SIGNAL ERRATIC return?

Yes

- Go To 3

No

- Repair is complete.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraints System Verification Test.

3. REPLACE THE OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER

WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions can result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair.
