P0711-TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR "A" CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE
For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.
Theory of Operation
The Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor is used to determine shift schedule selection. Transmission Oil Temperature is also used in TCC operation. This DTC is checking for a slow, erratic, skewed or shifted Transmission Oil Temperature sensor that is within the passing criteria of the Transmission Oil Temperature sensor High or Low DTCs. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) monitors the transmission temperature by comparing Transmission Oil Temperature to Ambient and Engine Coolant Temperature after a cold soak, by comparing Transmission Oil temperature increases in relation to Engine temperature increases, and abnormal changes over time.
- When Monitored:
Ignition on and the engine running.
No CAN Bus DTCs.
No Transmission or Engine sensor DTCs.
After cold soak. Or,
During Drive cycle.
- Set Condition:
Change in Transmission Oil Temperature is less than a calibrated value over time (slow to change). Or,
Change in Transmission Oil Temperature is greater that a calibrated value (rapid change). Or,
Transmission Oil Temperature is less than expected after a calibrated time (little or no change). Or,
Transmission Oil Temperature is greater than Engine Coolant temperature by a calibrated value (skewed or shifted sensor reading).
Always perform the AW60T Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview.
1. CHECK IF DTC IS CURRENT
1. Using the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.
2. Record the Environmental Data and any DTCs.
3. Clear DTCs.
4. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
5. Read TCM DTCs.
Did the DTC reset?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Go To 4
2. CHECK THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Turn the ignition off to the lock position.
2. Disconnect TCM harness connector and remove the TCM from the transmission.
3. Measure the resistance of the internal Output Speed sensor between ground the appropriate terminal of the TCM transmission connector.
Is the resistance above 100k Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Remove the Transmission Side cover and inspect the internal harness for high resistance or intermittent short to ground. Service and Repair. If no short is found, replace the Transmission Temperature sensor.
- Perform the AW60T VERIFICATION TEST. AW60T Transmission Verification Test.
3. CHECK THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR
1. Measure the resistance of the Transmission Temperature Sensor between the Transmission Temperature Signal circuit and the Transmission Temperature Sensor Ground circuit in the appropriate terminals of the TCM transmission connector.
2. Using the chart at the chart above, compare the Temperature Sensor temperature to the correlating resistance value.
Is the resistance within the specified range when the sensor is at the given temperature?
Yes
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) pins, terminals, and connectors for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace and program the TCM. AW60T TCM Programming Procedure.
- Perform the AW60T VERIFICATION TEST. AW60T Transmission Verification Test.
No
- Remove the Transmission Side cover and inspect the internal harness for high resistance or intermittent short to ground. Service and Repair. If no trouble is found, replace the Transmission Temperature sensor.
- Perform the AW60T VERIFICATION TEST. AW60T Transmission Verification Test.
4. CHECK WIRING AND CONNECTORS
1. The conditions necessary to set the DTC are not present at this time.
2. Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
3. Wiggle the wires while checking for shorted and open circuits.
4. Check for any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the AW60T VERIFICATION TEST. AW60T Transmission Verification Test.
No
- Test Complete.
