Interior - Front Seat Easy Entry Handle Is Inoperative

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 23-032-11, DATED August 12, 2011, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION AND NO ASTERISKS HAVE BEEN USED TO HIGHLIGHT REVISIONS.

SUBJECT:
Front Seat Easy Entry Handle Inoperable

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing a tie strap to secure the recliner cable retaining clip to the seat recliner lever to both seats and/or making an adjustment to the cable compensator for the driver seat.

MODELS:

2012 (FF) Fiat 500

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience an inoperable easy entry lever (located near headrest) on passenger and/or driver seat. The cable attachment may unhook from the release lever on either seat causing the condition. Additionally, a cable compensator located on driver seat may require adjustment.

DIAGNOSIS:
Operate the driver and/or passenger easy entry handle to verify the condition. If either seat is inoperable follow Repair Procedure to correct the condition and prevent it from reoccurrence on both seats. If the customer describes the symptom, perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
Removal of the passenger seat only is required for the repair. The driver seat does not need to be removed from the vehicle to complete the repair.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the passenger front seat. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT > under: Service Info > 23 - Body > Seats > SEAT, Front > Removal.





2. Remove recliner handle center cap (2) (Fig. 1).

3. Remove recliner handle retaining fastener (3) and remove handle (Fig. 1).





4. Remove side shield fasteners at side (1) and rear (2) of side shield (Fig. 2).

5. Install tie strap (3) through hole of seat recliner lever (1) securing cable retaining clip (4) and cut off excess length (Fig. 3).

NOTE:
Reattach the cable retaining clip to the seat adjusting lever if disengagement has occurred.

NOTE:
Make sure the head of the tie strap is facing outward and does not interfere with lever travel.

6. Reverse Step # 2 through Step # 4 and reinstall the passenger front seat. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT > under: Service Info > 23 - Body > Seats > SEAT, Front > Installation.





7. Position the driver seat back and track in the full forward position (1) and fully unzip the seat upholstery zipper cursors (2) in order to unhook the lower seat back (J-channel) retainer at the bottom of the seat back upholstery (3) (Fig. 4).





8. Locate the seat recliner cable retaining clip (1) and insert a tie strap (2) through the seat recliner adjusting lever (Fig. 5).

NOTE:
Reattach the cable retaining clip to the seat adjusting lever if disengagement has occurred.

NOTE:
Make sure the head of the tie strap is facing outward and does not interfere with lever travel.

9. Locate the easy entry cable compensator (1) and pry open the lock tab in order to adjust the cable housing length by holding the compensator level with the bottom of the metal seat support brace (2) and pull the cable housing into the compensator housing until all slack is out of the cable housing while it is held level (Fig. 6).





NOTE:
Reinstall the compensator lock tab slightly so that it can be squeezed into position once the compensator housing has been adjusted while at the same time being held level.

10. Reverse Step # 7 in order to reinstall the seat back upholstery.

11. Inspect the easy entry handles for proper operation.

12. Did the handles operate properly?

a. Yes >>> Return the vehicle to the customer.

b. No >>> Further diagnosis is required.
