Occupant Restraint Controller - Removal
REMOVAL
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury, never strike or drop the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), as it can damage the impact sensor or affect its calibration. The ORC contains the impact sensor, which enables the system to deploy the SRS components. If an ORC is accidentally dropped during service, the module must be scrapped and replaced with a new unit. Failure to observe this warning could result in accidental, incomplete, or improper SRS component deployment.
1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
2. Remove the screw (2) that secures the passenger side console closeout cover (1) to the center console support structure of the instrument panel.
3. Using a trim stick or another suitable wide flat-bladed tool, disengage the two snap clips that secure the rear edge of the closeout cover to the front of the front floor console.
4. Pull the rear edge of the closeout cover rearward to disengage the retainer that secures the front edge of the closeout cover to the front floor panel.
5. Remove the passenger side closeout cover from the vehicle.
6. Reach around the front edge of the driver side console closeout cover to the front of the floor panel transmission tunnel to access, unlatch and disconnect the wire harness connector (2) from the driver side Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) (1) connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. To disconnect the wire harness connector from the ORC, depress the release tab and lift the lever arm on the connector.
7. Still on the driver side, remove two of the screws (1) that secure the left front and left rear mounts of the ORC (2) to the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel.
8. Working from the passenger side front of the floor panel transmission tunnel, unlatch and disconnect the body wire harness (4) connector (3) from the passenger side ORC connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. To disconnect the wire harness connector from the ORC, depress the release tab and lift the lever arm on the connector.
9. Still on the passenger side, remove the screw (1) that secures the right rear mount of the ORC to the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel.
10. Remove the ORC from the vehicle.
