Parking Brake Switch - Operation

OPERATION

The park brake switch is a normally closed, mechanically actuated plunger-type switch that is operated by the park brake lever mechanism. The switch provides a path to ground for the park brake switch sense input of the Body Control Module (BCM). When the BCM senses the park brake is applied, it provides an electronic park brake switch status message over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) which controls the park brake indicator.

Some of the hard wired inputs and outputs of the BCM and the park brake switch may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. However, the most reliable, efficient and accurate means to diagnose the BCM and the park brake switch requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.
