Occupant Restraint Controller - Installation
INSTALLATION
WARNING:
- To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
- To avoid serious or fatal injury, never strike or drop the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), as it can damage the impact sensor or affect its calibration. The ORC contains the impact sensor, which enables the system to deploy the SRS components. If an ORC is accidentally dropped during service, the module must be scrapped and replaced with a new unit. Failure to observe this warning could result in accidental, incomplete, or improper SRS component deployment.
1. Carefully position the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) (2) onto the front of the floor panel transmission tunnel, aligning the mounting holes in the ORC to the holes in the floor panel. When the ORC is correctly positioned, the bottom of the housing will fit flush with the floor and the orientation arrow on the label on top of the housing will be pointed forward in the vehicle.
2. Install and tighten the three screws (1) that secure the ORC to the floor panel transmission tunnel. Two screws (left front and left rear ORC mounts) are installed from the driver side and one screw (right front ORC mount) is installed from the passenger side. Tighten the screws to 8 N.m (71 in. lbs.).
3. Working from the passenger side front of the floor panel transmission tunnel, reconnect and latch the body wire harness (4) connector (3) to the passenger side ORC connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. Be certain that the latch on the connector is fully engaged.
4. Working from the driver side front of the floor panel transmission tunnel, reconnect and latch the instrument panel wire harness connector (2) to the driver side ORC (1) connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. Be certain that the latch on the connector is fully engaged.
5. Position the passenger side closeout cover (1) into the vehicle.
6. Position the retainer that secures the front edge of the closeout cover to the opening in the front floor panel, then push the rear edge of the closeout cover forward to engage it.
7. Align the two snap clips that secure the rear edge of the closeout cover to the front of the front floor console, then push firmly over each snap clip location on the panel until the clips snap into place.
8. Install and tighten the screw (2) that secures the closeout cover to the center console support structure of the instrument panel. Tighten the screw securely.
9. Do not reconnect the battery negative cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component.
