Disassemble


1. On 1982 - 86 models except 1985 - 86 Bronco II and Ranger, remove two rivets and one attaching screw, or three screws, plus retaining ring, the thermostatic spring housing assembly, spring housing gasket, locking and index plate and fast idle link and bushings.
2. On 1985 - 86 Bronco II and Ranger models, remove first two rivets and one attaching screw plus retaining ring, the choke cup assembly, spring housing gasket, locking and index plate and fast idle link and bushings.
3. On Bronco II and Ranger models, remove fuel filter inlet.
4. On all models except Bronco II and Ranger, remove EGR WOT dump valve and bracket assembly and front mounted solenoid and bracket, if equipped.
5. On 1982 models, remove air horn assembly attaching screws, solepot or throttle kicker, air horn assembly and air horn gasket.
6. On 1983 - 85, some 1986 models and except Bronco II and Ranger, remove air horn assembly attaching screws. ISC unit and bracket assembly or throttle vacuum positioner, air horn assembly and air horn gasket.
7. On some 1986 models and Bronco II and Ranger, remove air horn assembly attaching screws, solevac or throttle kicker, air horn assembly and air horn gasket.
8. On all models, hold air horn bottom side up and remove float pin and float and lever assembly.
9. Turn air horn assembly over and catch needle pin, spring and needle.
10. Remove needle seat and gasket, then the air cleaner bracket.
11. Remove choke plate attaching screws, filing burrs from choke shaft as necessary.
12. Remove choke plate from air horn assembly, then the choke link lever and attaching screw.
13. On models except Bronco II and Ranger, rotate choke shaft and piston assembly counterclockwise until choke piston is out of choke piston cylinder, then remove assembly from air horn.
14. Remove piston pin and piston from choke piston lever and link assembly.
15. On all models, remove spring retainer for mechanical fuel bowl vent flapper valve, if equipped.
16. Remove vent shaft rod and spring and the flapper valve, noting positions of ends of torsion spring on vent rod for proper installation. Do not immerse air horn in any cleaner or solvent, or damage to vent shaft seal may result.
17. Turn main body casting upside down and catch accelerating pump check ball and weight.
18. Remove throttle shaft mechanical fuel bowl lever retaining screw at end of throttle shaft.
19. Remove operating lever spring washer, vent rod, actuating lever and E-clip.
20. Loosen throttle shaft arm screw and remove arm and pump connector link.
21. Remove fast idle cam and shoulder screw.
22. Remove accelerator pump diaphragm housing screws, and the accelerator pump discharge tube if equipped.
23. Lift out pump diaphragm assembly, the pump lifter link and metering rod as a unit.
24. Remove lifter link seal.
25. Disengage metering rod arm spring from metering rod and remove metering rod from metering rod arm assembly, noting location of any washers shimming either spring for proper assembly.
26. Compress upper pump spring and remove spring retainer.
27. Remove upper spring, metering rod arm assembly and pump lifter link from pump diaphragm shaft.
28. Compress pump diaphragm spring and remove pump diaphragm spring retainer, spring and pump diaphragm assembly from pump diaphragm housing assembly.
29. Using suitable tool, remove main metering rod jet and low speed jet.
30. Remove retaining screws and separate throttle body flange assembly from main body casting, then remove body flange gasket.
31. Remove throttle plate retaining screws, filing staked ends as necessary.
32. Slide throttle shaft and lever assembly out of throttle body flange assembly, noting location of ends of torsion spring on throttle shaft for proper assembly.
33. On 1982 - 86 models except 1983 - 84 Federal models over 8500 GVW, remove idle mixture screw tamper resistant cap and cup assembly as follows:
a. Invert throttle body or carburetor assembly and cover all vacuum and fuel connection openings with tape.
b. Using hacksaw, carefully saw slot lengthwise through metal thickness of cup, being careful not to let saw blade contact throttle body.
c. Insert screwdriver in newly cut slot and twist, spreading outer cup enough to allow removal of inner cup.
d. After removing cup, count and record number of turns required to lightly seat mixture screw needle, then remove screw and spring.
e. Clean metal shavings from carburetor, then remove tape from openings.
34. On 1983 - 84 Federal models over 8500 GVW, remove idle mixture screw limiter cap with suitable tool, count and record number of turns required to lightly seat mixture screw tool, count and record number of turns required to lightly seat mixture screw needle and remove screw and spring.
35. On 1984 - 86 models except Bronco II and Ranger, remove three screws attaching ISC unit to bracket and remove unit, then remove wire harness bracket if equipped.
