^ SHEET METAL -"BOOMING" NOISE - CAB BACK PANEL DAMPER

LIGHT TRUCK: 1983-86 F-SERIES


ISSUE: A "booming" noise between 45-60 mph/72-96 km/h on 1983-86 F-Series vehicles with an AOD transmission and a style side pick-up box may be caused by the vehicle component combination.

ACTION: To reduce the "booming" noise, install a new design back panel damper and bracket assembly using the following service procedure.

1. Remove pick-up box mount bolts and fuel tank filler pipe attaching bolts. Disconnect taillamp wiring.

2. Push pick-up box about 12 inches rearward to allow working space for installing the damper assembly (E7TZ-10110A00-A).

3. If equipped with carpet, remove carpet from cab back panel.

4. Drill four (4) holes 6.7 mm min./7.2 mm max. diameter and install damper assembly to cab back panel, Figure 16. (It is important that back panel damper mounting hole patterns are centered side-to-side to be sure of clearance between back panel ribs and damper.)

5. Install damper bracket (E7TZ-10110A06-A) on inside of cab with bracket studs sticking out rearward through holes.

6. Install damper on bracket studs and fasten damper with four (4) hex flange nuts (N620480- S2). Torque nuts to 6-10 ft.lbs. (8-13 N-m).

7. Push pick-up box to mounting position and make sure 12 mm minimum clearance between the stud end to the pick-up box. Fasten the box to the frame. Torque to 40-78 ft.lbs. (54-106 N-m). Reinstall fuel filler pipe and connect taillamp wiring.

8. If equipped with carpet, install carpet on the back panel.
