LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 ECONOLINE, F100-350
During the 1983 model year, Econoline and F Series (4x2) light trucks with manual steering will begin using Koyo steering gears similar to those used on the Ranger trucks. The Koyo gear can be identified by the letter "K" cast into the housing near the worm bearing adjusting plug.
Removal and Installation
Use the 1983 Truck Chassis Shop Manual, Section 13-33 for removal and installation, and installation torques.
Service of Gear Assembly
Use the 1983 Ranger Shop Manual, Section 13-35 for gear disassembly and assembly procedure and assembly torques.
Meshload and Preload Adjustments
Meshload and preload adjustment values are unique to the heavy duty Koyo gear as follows:

Description Checking Readjusting
Worm Bearing Preload 5-9 in.lb. 7-9 in.lb.
Total Center Meshload 9-14 in.lb. 12-14 in.lb.
Minimum Meshload Over Preload 2 in.lb. 4 in.lb.
One new tool is required, tool T83T-3504-AH Lock Nut Wrench, to remove/install the worm bearing adjusting plug lock nut. All other tools are same as for Ranger.
