83ford6 Article No. 83-23-17

LEAKS - LUBRICANT - REAR AXLE VENT - VEHICLES WITH 8.8" RING GEAR REAR AXLES

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 F100-250, E250 AND BRONCO

Some of the subject vehicles are experiencing lubricant leakage from the rear axle vent. To alleviate this condition a field modification to the vent is required. Note that while HOSE lengths and routings may differ depending upon application, vent relocation instructions remain the same.

Figure 11:

VENT RELOCATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove the vent and install one 7/16"-20 UNF bolt 1" long (with Loctite E0AZ-19554-B or equivalent) through the brake junction block and torque to 8-18 ft.lbs., Figure 11, View 1.
2. Locate and center punch the right hand tube as shown in Figure 11, Views 1 and 2.
3. Using a 1/4" drill bit, drill a pilot hole just to the point of piercing the tube. Hold drill at 90~ angle relative to axle tube surface while drilling.
4. Using a 25/64" drill bit, redrill the hole just to the point of piercing the tube. Remove all drill chips from the tube exterior. Remove the bit and put a dab of grease on the end. This will prevent as many chips as possible from entering the axle. Drill the rest of the way through the tube. Hold the drill at 90~ angle relative to axle tube surface while drilling.
5. Using a 7/16-20 UNF Class B thread tap and a dab of grease, tap the hole. Hold tap at 90~ angle relative to axle tube surface while tapping.
6. Install vent E3TZ-4022-A using Loctite EOAZ- 19554-B or equivalent and torque to 8-18 ft.lbs., Figure 11, View 3.
7. Install the vent hose and clamp as shown in Figure 11, View 3.
