Engine - Rich Condition/Flooding

Article No. 85-10-28

HARD START - ENGINE FLOODING AND/OR RICH CONDITION (5.0L EFI)

LIGHT TRUCK 1985 F SERIES AND BRONCO

If engine (5.0L with EFI) floods and/or runs extremely rich, refer to the following:

CONDITION 1: Engine Runs Extremely Rich

1. Perform EEC IV Quick Test, by referring to 1985 Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual (Section 19-4).

2. Correct any code(s) as required with the exception of code No. 42 ("always rich").

3. Check and verify fuel pressure regulator is functioning properly, by using a hand vacuum pump and pumping regulator to 19" Hg. Regulator should maintain constant 19" Hg.

NOTE: If pressure regulator is leaking, inspect fuel return line for obstruction. Check for sufficient fuel return to tank.

4. Check engine oil for fuel contamination. Change oil and filter if signs of fuel are present (i.e. crankcase oil level too high, smell of fuel in oil or oil has "water-like" texture).

5. Check ECT, ACT and MAP sensor connections. Also, check for manifold vacuum at MAP sensor.

6. Visually inspect all engine wire harness and vacuum hose routings and connections.

7. Inspect fuel injector harness for broken, cut, shorted wires. Disconnect No. 5 injector connection and check for voltage between pins with ignition key in the "On" position. Reconnect No. 5 injector. Repeat with injector No. 6. A voltage of greater than 0 volts may indicate a shorted injector harness or a suspect processor.

CAUTION: Re-check harness before changing processor. A shorted injector bank could damage a good processor.

8. Remove and inspect spark plugs, noting which cylinder(s) contain fouled plugs. If only cylinders 1, 4, 5, 8 or 2, 3, 6, 7 are fouled a suspect processor is indicated.

9. Change processor and fouled plugs.
10. Perform EEC IV Quick Test (Step No. 1). If code No. 42 is still present, perform pin point test by referring to procedure outlined in the 1985 Emission Diagnosis Manual (Section 22-121).

CONDITION II: Flooded Engine - Won't Start

1. Remove plugs, crank engine to purge fuel.

2. Install new plugs and perform steps outlined in condition No. 1.

3. If Quick Test is successful, remove thermactor solenoid electrical connections. This dumps thermactor air to prevent catalyst damage.

4. Start engine, allow to idle until normal operating temperature is reached.

5. Reconnect thermactor solenoid electrical connections (Step No. 3).

6. Check all engine wire harness and vacuum hose routings and connections to ensure there are no potential obstructions or insecure connections.
