Ignition Switch: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then place ignition lock cylinder in the Lock position.
2. Remove steering wheel as describer under ``Steering Wheel, Replace.''
3. On models equipped with tilt steering column, remove upper extension shroud by depressing top and bottom of shroud to release from retaining plate.
4. On all models, remove two attaching screws from bottom of panel located to the right of the steering column, then pull panel outward to remove.
5. Remove steering column shroud as follows:
a. Remove two screws from bottom of steering column shroud, then swing bottom portion of shroud open and remove two screws attaching shroud to retainer plate.
b. Remove ignition lock cylinder as describer under ``Ignition Lock Cylinder, Replace.''
c. Remove turn signal lever.
d. Raise left side of shroud to clear turn signal lever receptacle, then pull upward on right side of shroud until embossment clears lock cylinder receptacle.
e. Carefully work shroud past instrument panel and remove.
6. Disconnect electrical connector from ignition switch.
7. Using a suitable hammer and chisel, rotate break-off head bolts attaching ignition switch to lock cylinder housing one turn counterclockwise, then using suitable pliers to grasp bolt head and remove bolts.
8. Disconnect ignition switch from actuator pin and remove.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Place ignition switch in the Run position prior to installation. When installing ignition lock, it also must be placed in the Run position. After completing installation, check ignition switch for proper operation.
