RACK YOKE PLUG PRELOADThis adjustment is not a normal service procedure, and should only be performed if the input shaft and valve assembly have been removed.
1. Thoroughly clean exterior of steering gear.
2. Install two long bolts and washers through bushings and attach gear to bench mounted holding fixture T57L-500-B or equivalent. Do not remove external pressure lines unless they are leaking or damaged, as they must be replaced if removed.
3. Using suitable tool, drain power steering fluid by rotating input shaft lock-to-lock. Cover ports on valve housing with shop towel while draining gear.
4. Insert an inch lb. torque wrench with a maximum capacity of 30---60 inch lbs. into pinion shaft torque adapter T74P-3504-R, or equivalent, and position adapter and torque wrench on input shaft splines.
5. Using suitable tool, loosen yoke plug locknut, then the yoke plug.
6. Rotate input shaft so rack is at center of travel by counting number of complete revolutions of input shaft, then divide by two.
7. Clean threads of yoke plug, then torque plug to 45---50 inch lbs.
8. Back off yoke plug approximately {1/8} turn, 44 ° minimum to 54 ° maximum, until torque required to initiate and sustain rotation of input shaft is 7---18 inch lbs.
9. Install suitable tool on yoke plug locknut and, while holding yoke plug, torque locknut to 44---66 ft. lbs., ensuring that yoke plug does not move. After tightening locknut, recheck input shaft torque.
10. If external pressure lines were removed, replace with new lines. Remove any plastic residue from seals on housing ports before installing new lines.
