TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC - FLOOR SHIFTER BINDING OR MISALIGNED - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 6/15/90
LIGHT TRUCK: 1986-90 AEROSTAR
ISSUE: The shifter pawl may be bent from excessive force being applied to it when shifting out of or into PARK, while the shifter button was not fully depressed. This can cause customer complaints because the shifter button action may be stiff and the lever may be difficult to move out of or into the PARK position. In addition, the PRNDL indicator may be misaligned with the various transmission functions.
ACTION: Inspect the shifter pawl and, if necessary, replace the shifter. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Inspect the unit for a bent shifter pawl by raising the floor mounted bezel after removing the four (4) retaining screws. Look at the pawl from the passenger side.
2. If the pawl is bent noticeably and does not easily retract from the PARK notch in the detent plate, remove the shifter assembly for further inspection. Refer to the appropriate model year Aerostar Shop Manual, Section 07-05, for removal procedure.
3. If the pawl is definitely bent, DO NOT STRAIGHTEN it. Replace it (F19Z-7210-A) and the bezel (F19Z-7D443-A). Refer to the appropriate model year Aerostar Shop Manual, Section 07-05, for service details.
NOTE: THE BEZEL ON VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 1/6/91 WILL NOT FIT THE REPLACEMENT SHIFTER. THEREFORE, IT MUST BE REPLACED.
