Article No. 88-12-19
LIGHT TRUCK: 1987-88 AEROSTAR
ISSUE: Rear brake drag that appears to be caused by an over adjusted parking brake may be caused by parking brake cables not returning to a fully released position. This will result in a tight feel in the parking brake control when applying the parking brake. This condition may allow the parking brake to be fully applied when the parking brake control is at the first notch of handle travel.
ACTION: To correct this, install a new design front cable return spring. Refer to the following service procedure.
1. With the transmission in NEUTRAL and parking brake off, rotate the rear wheels to check for brake drag.
2. Inspect cables and cable seals for damagebent, cracked, plastic coating peeled, undercoating, etc.
FIGURE 10:
3. Release the parking brake cable tension as follows:
a. PAWL LOCK-OUT
Remove the boot cover from the parking brake control assembly.
Place the control in the "released" position.
Insert a steel pin through the pawl lock-out pin hole. The pin must be inserted from the inboard side of the control, (larger hole), at a slightly upward and forward angle then swept downward and rearward to disengage the self-adjusting pawl and then insert through a hole on the other side. This locks out the self-adjusting pawl, Figure 10.
NOTE: LOCK-OUT PINES CAN BE FABRICATED FROM A 1/8" STEEL ROD, 2 TO 3 INCHES LONG.
FIGURE 11:
b. SELF-ADJUSTING SPRING LOCK-OUT
With one (1) person inside the vehicle, raise the vehicle on a hoist.
Have another person pull down and hold the front cable.
The person inside will insert a steel pin through the self-adjusting spring lock-out holes in the lever and control assembly.
This locks the ratchet wheel in the "cable released" position, Figure 11.
FIGURE 12:
4. Disconnect the front and rear cables from the equalizer, Figure 12.
5. By hand, push and pull each cable in its housing to make sure of smooth action.
6. Remove rear drums and clean rear brake assemblies. Regrease the shoe ledges with Front Disc Brake Caliper Slide Grease, (D7AZ-19590-A).
7. Using a screw driver, pry each shoe slightly off the anchor pin. Check for smooth action and full return to anchor pin.
8. Pull and release each rear cable by hand and check for full parking brake lever return. Perform replacement or repairs as required to assure proper brake and cable action.
9. If any parts show signs of damage or do not operate freely, replace. Refer to the Aerostar Shop Manual, Section 02-06 for component removal and installation procedures.
10. Readjust the rear brakes. Refer to the Aerostar Shop Manual, Section 02-02.
11. Reassemble rear brakes and drums.
FIGURE 13:
12. Install the NEW Front Cable Return Spring, (E89Z-2A651-A) on the equalizer, Figure 13. Reconnect the cables.
13. Remove the two (2) steel lock pins from the parking brake control assembly.
NOTE: REMOVE THE PAWL LOCK-OUT PIN BEFORE REMOVING THE SELF-ADJUSTING SPRING LOCK-OUT PIN. IF THE SELF-ADJUSTING SPRING LOCK-OUT PIN IS REMOVED BEFORE THE PAWL LOCK-OUT PIN IS REMOVED, THE CABLE END MAY BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE RATCHET WHEEL CAUSING THE SPRING TO UNWIND AND RELEASE TENSION.
CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE THE STEEL LOCK PIN UNTIL THE CABLES ARE CONNECTED TO THE EQUALIZER. PIN REMOVAL RELEASES THE TENSION IN THE RATCHET WHEEL CAUSING THE SPRING TO UNWIND AND RELEASE TENSION. IF THE PIN IS PREMATURELY REMOVED, THE ENTIRE CONTROL ASSEMBLY MUST BE REMOVED TO RESET SPRING TENSION.
14. Cycle the control 6-8 times to make sure that the system is operating properly.
15. Rotate rear wheels to check for brake drag.
