This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include 1991 model-year vehicles.
ISSUE:
Oil leaks at the rear crankshaft oil seal or the engine oil dipstick tube may be caused by excessive pressure in the engine crankcase. This occurs because ice forms in the PCV closure hose in ambient temperatures of -4~F (-20~C) and below.
ACTION:
Install a filter and tee assembly in the crankcase ventilation closure hose. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Remove the crankcase ventilation closure hose from the truck, Figure 1.
2. Cut a 1-1/8" (28.6 mm) piece out of the crankcase ventilation closure hose. Make the cut 4" (101.6 mm) from the air cleaner end of the hose.
3. Install the filter and tee assembly (FO9Z-6C652-A) to both ends of the cut tube, Figure 1.
4. Re-install the crankcase ventilation closure hose, filter and tee assembly with the filter in the vertical DOWN position.
