NOTE: When applying the seam sealer, the vehicle should be at a temperature of 70~F (21~C) for at least one (1) hour before seam sealer is applied and 96 hours afterwards to make sure the seam sealer cures completely.
Due to the characteristics of the air dry seam sealer and the length of cure time required, it is important to set aside a stall where the vehicle can remain for a period of 24 hours.
Scaffolding, the full length of the vehicle, is required to make sure of proper and even flow of seam sealer.
Figure 29:
For seam sealer repairs, remove all existing material from roof channel, Figure 29.
Clean metal surfaces (mating edges) of roof channel base and roof panel assembly with silicone and wax remover.
Roof panel replacement requires coating the metal surfaces (per OEM procedures). Allow to dry before proceeding.
Set align and spot weld roof panel in place following recommended OEM procedures.
Prime entire roof section and prepare for painting.
Mask off front and rear of roof channel for sealer runoff.
Obtain materials from kit provided.
Set pressure regulator on the gun at 10 psi for proper flow rate.
Apply Automotive Chemical Corporation A-106-01 Sealer Material.
Apply at least a 3/16 inch thick half round ribbon of seam sealer.
Start at the rear of the vehicle, and in one continuous motion, seal to the front windshield header.
If better leveling or removal of any imperfection is required, apply a thin film of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). (Use the wash bottle included in the kit.)
Do not spray MEK directly into the sealer seam.
Allow sealer to air dry for 24 hours prior to the application of OEM enamel or lacquer finishes. A film created on the sealer is due to the solvent which cures the sealer.
NOTE: DO NOT MOVE THE VEHICLE.
Finish with the acrylic enamel or acrylic lacquer per OEM recommendations. Repair shop should not apply any heat or try to force dry sealer and enamel. This could cause blisters in the sealer.
CAUTION: Due to the characteristics of the air dry repair seam sealer, it is recommended that the repaired area not be disturbed for a period of seven (7) days.
