^ NOISE - SQUEAKS AND RATTLES COMING FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL

LIGHT TRUCK 1987 AEROSTAR

ISSUE: Squeaks and rattles from several areas of the instrument panel may be caused by excessive flash, poor fits and/or the glove box hinge.

ACTION: The following is a list of squeaks and rattles, their location and the repair of each:

CONDITION #1:

The hinge allows fore and aft movement, causing a rattle.

Figure 36:

Correction:

Remove glove box door (three screws on hinge). Crimp several "barrels" of hinge, both glove box door and instrument panel side of hinge in (3) places, Figure 36. Install glove box, making sure door is properly positioned in instrument panel opening.

CONDITION #2:

Insufficient clearance between the cluster finish panel and the left hand (L.H.) control pod.

Figure 37:

Correction:

Remove L.H. cluster panel (control pod). Rework attachment bracket (drill hole) to allow the control pod to move 3.5 mm aft, Figure 37. Install E630023- S71 flat washer between control pod and instrument panel at the (2) lower attaching screws.

NOTE: If the flat washers are visible below the lower edge of the control pod, they should be covered with black touch-up paint. By adding a fore and aft adjustment hole to the attaching bracket and using flat washers on the (2) lower attaching screws, the control pod can now be mounted, leaving a slight gap between the control pod and cluster finish panel.

CONDITION #3:

Insufficient clearance between lower instrument panel center attaching slot flanges and the upper instrument panel.

Figure 38:

Correction:

Remove lower instrument panel, per Section 78-01 of the 1987 Aerostar Shop Manual. Bend the corners of the flanges on both sides of the attaching slots approximately 3 to 5 mm downward, so they do not touch the upper instrument panel when both panels are bolted together, Figure 38.

CONDITION #4:

Excessive flash on lower right hand (R.H.) corner of cluster finish panel where it contacts the control pod.

Figure 39:

Correction:

Remove instrument cluster panel assembly (five screws). Remove flash on lower R.H. corner of panel where it contacts the control pod, Figure 39.
