^ TRANSMISSION - TK5 - HARD TO SHIFT GEARS IN COLD WEATHER

LIGHT TRUCK: 1983-87 RANGER,BRONCO II 1986-87 AEROSTAR
ISSUE: A hard to shift transmission during the first few miles of cold weather operation may be caused by the characteristics of the transmission lubricant. The hard shifting condition becomes less noticeable as the transmission lubricant warms up.

ACTION: Drain and refill the transmission with Merkur manual transmission fluid. The Merkur fluid is less sensitive to outside temperature change. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


1. Drain the transmission front main case by removing the drain plug in the sump cover plate.
2. Drain the transmission rear housing cavity by removing the drain plug on the lower left side.

3. Reinstall both drain plugs.

4. Remove the fill plug in the front main case.

5. Fill the transmission with Merkur manual transmission fluid, (E5RY-19C547-A) until the fluid level is even with the fill plug threads in the front case.

NOTE: REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE MODEL YEAR LIGHT TRUCK SHOP MANUAL FOR SPECIFIC TRANSMISSION FILL QUANTITIES.

6. Reinstall the fill plug in the front main case.

7. Torque the two (2) drain plugs and the fill plug to specification. Refer to the appropriate model year Light Truck Shop Manual for torque specifications.

NOTE: ALWAYS USE THE MERKUR MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID ANY TIME A TK5 TRANSMISSION IS SERVICED.
