ISSUE: Loose radio antenna mounting screws or front fender sheet metal that is buckled around the antenna's base may be caused by higher than normal loads applied to the antenna when the vehicle goes through some brushless car washes. This can be caused by inadequate fender reinforcement beneath the antenna's base.
ACTION: To correct this, install a radio antenna opening reinforcement using the following service procedure.
1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly and the fender splash shield.
2. Disconnect and remove the radio antenna.
NOTE: SAVE THE RETAINING SCREWS.
3. Using a #18 drill, enlarge the three (3) antenna base mounting holes.
4. Restore the fender surface to its original shape. Refinish and apply finish paint.
NOTE: MAKE SURE THE ANTENNA MOUNTING HOLES ARE PAINTED. THIS WILL PROTECT THE SHEET METAL FROM CORROSION.
FIGURE 7:
5. Position the fender reinforcement (E89Z-18A954-A) beneath the antenna mounting surface, Figure 7. Make sure the reinforcement fits tight against the fender and install the retaining screws removed in Step 2.
6. Before removing the hood hinge to hood attaching screws, mark the area where it attaches to the hood. Remove the hood hinge.
FIGURE 8:
7. Using a #30 drill, drill two (2) holes in the reinforcement at the locations shown in Figure 8.
8. Install two (2) blind rivets in the holes drilled in Step 7. Paint the rivet heads.
9. Remove the antenna mounting screws and install the antenna and the base cap.
10. Install the hood hinge to hinge attaching screws. Torque to 12-19 ft.lbs. (17-27 N-m).
11. Apply Ford Super Seal Anti-Corrosion Compound (D8AZ-19515-B) on the new reinforcement and its surrounding area. Install the front fender splash shield.
12. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
