^ BRAKES - REAR - GRAB OR "SQUEAL" WHEN COLD

^ NOISE - "SQUEAL" FROM REAR BRAKES WHEN COLD

LIGHT TRUCK:
1986-92 AEROSTAR

ISSUE:
The rear brakes may grab or "squeal" in the morning and/or after the vehicle sits for a long period of time, especially in cool and damp weather conditions. This occurs on the first few brake applications when the brakes are cool and generally in high humidity conditions. It may be caused by brake lining material that is highly sensitive to humidity.

ACTION:
Install new brake shoe and lining assemblies that are made of material that is less sensitive to humidity. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the rear brake shoes. Refer to the 1992 Aerostar Service Manual, Section 06-02, for removal procedure.

2. Inspect the wheel cylinder's bores. Remove any rust on the interior of the wheel cylinder bore underneath the boot.

3. Clean the brake assembly and drums.

4. Clean the backing plate with a degreaser or equivalent.

5. Seal the exterior of the brake backing, axle flange junction area and wheel cylinder with rubberized undercoating (D8AZ-19515-BA) or equivalent.

6. Install the new brake shoe and lining assemblies (F29Z-2200-A). Refer to the 1992 Aerostar Service Manual, Section 06-02, for installation procedure.

7. Adjust the brakes according to the Service Manual
