Steering Column Support Brackets - Loose

STEERING - COLUMN SUPPORT BRACKETS - LOOSE
LIGHT TRUCK: 1986-90 AEROSTAR



ISSUE: The steering column may feel loose. This occurs because of the loose fit of the upper to lower tube assemblies.

ACTION: Install two new brackets at the upper steering column attaching bracket. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the lower instrument panel.

NOTE: DO NOT DISCONNECT ANY ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS.

2. Remove the two (2) upper steering column attaching screws, Figure 1.

3. Remove the three (3) lower steering column to cowl attaching screws, Figure 1.

4. Remove and throw away...

^ Two (2) shims from 1986 through early 1989 models

^ One (1) shim strap from 1989 through early 1990 models.

The shim(s) are located between the bracket and the instrument panel.

5. Install a new upper steering column bracket (FO9Z-3678-A) and a new lower steering column bracket (FO9Z-3678-B) on the steering column.

6. Attach the brackets with two (2) (N610937-S2) screws. Tighten to 18-26 lb.in. (2.0-2.9 N-m).

NOTE: MAKE SURE THE NEW BRACKETS ARE INSTALLED IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THE OLD SHIM(S). THE NEW BRACKETS MUST ALSO FUNCTION AS SHIMS BETWEEN THE COLUMN BRACKET AND INSTRUMENT PANEL.
7. Hand start the two (2) original upper steering column to cowl attaching screws.

NOTE: DO NOT SUBSTITUTE PARTS.

8. Tighten the three (3) original lower steering column to cowl attaching screws to 11-17 lb.ft. (15-23 N-m).

NOTE: DO NOT SUBSTITUTE PARTS.

9. Tighten the two (2) original upper steering column attaching screws to 11-17 lb.ft. (15-23 N-m).

NOTE: THIS TORQUE IS CRITICAL TO PROPER FUNCTION THE ENERGY ABSORBING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COLUMN. USE A TOROUE WRENCH AND SET IT AS CLOSE TO 14 LB.FT. (19 N-M) AS POSSIBLE.

10. Re-install the lower instrument panel.
