Campaign - Front Disc Brake Modification: Overview

88ford19

June, 1988

TO: All Ford Dealers

SUBJECT: Owner Notification M61 - Aerostar Front Brakes

IN CARES/OASIS - No

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM

Owners of affected Aerostars may notice a front brake grinding and groan noise during low speed, light brake pedal applications. This condition is related to brake friction elements and brake system resonance accentuated by front-end body parts.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Aerostars involved in this program were built at the St. Louis Assembly Plant.

Model-Year and Production Dates Involved

^ All 1986-Model Aerostars

^ All 1987-Model Aerostars manufactured from start of 1987-model production through March 4, 1987

NOT IN CARES/OASIS

CARES/OASIS will not be activated for this program, since the program is intended as extended coverage and owners are not requested to return their Aerostars unless the brake noise condition exists.

Although this program will not be contained within CARES/ OASIS, you should verify through these systems if Aerostars in this program are involved in any other field actions. Attempt to complete all field actions that apply in a single visit by the owner.

PROGRAM PROVISIONS AND LIMITATIONS

Owners of Aerostars in the affected build period will be notified that they have coverage for the brake noise condition during the base vehicle warranty coverage (12- months from the in-service date or 12,000-miles of operation, whichever comes first) or through March 31, 1989, WHICHEVER PROVIDES GREATER COVERAGE. (Time/mileage limitations are ignored until after March 31, 1989.)

SERVICE ACTION

All Aerostars returned for service will be corrected by installing revised front brake parts.

REFUNDS

Any owner who has paid for the repairs described in this program will be refunded the costs of parts and labor. Repairs must have been made prior to the receipt of notification of this program. Refund requests must be made by March 31, 1989.

APPROVAL OF REFUND

Please provide prompt approval of refund requests for the brake noise condition covered by this-program. Approval of requests should be made consistent with the concept of the "Customer Care Partnership", (CCP).

Refunds should be provided for repairs performed for the correction of the brake noise condition. The refund requests should be approved, in most cases, where vehicle mileage accumulation is relatively low. The program is not intended for normal or routine brake maintenance.

Use the condition description, time/mileage and date limitations of this program to approve refund requests. Contact your Service Zone Manager for assistance, in those instances, where you cannot resolve customer expectations.

COMBINED OWNER NOTIFICATION LETTERS

To minimize owner inconvenience, owners of 1986-model Aerostars involved in this program (M61) and also Owner Notification Program (M62) - A4LD Automatic Transmissions, will be notified with the letter shown on Attachment II of the dealer letter.

Owners of Aerostars involved in just the program for brakes (M61) will be notified with the letter shown on Attachment III of the dealer letter.

Technical and administrative instructions are provided on Attachment I.
