AFFECTED VEHICLES

All 1986, 1987 and 1988, Aerostar Vans and Wagons built through February 28, 1988 are covered by this program.

REASONS FOR THIS PROGRAM

The gears in the windshield wiper motor may break.

During severe cold weather the wiper blades may become frozen to the glass. If the wipers are turned on, the drive gears in the wiper motor may break.

If this condition occurs, dealers are to install a service kit to replace the gears within the existing wiper motor.

REFUNDS

Only for owner-paid repairs due to frozen wiper blades and performed before date of Owner Letter. Requests must be made by April 30, 1992.

AEROSTAR WINDSHIELD WIPER GEAR

REPLACEMENT

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION:
The permanent magnets used inside the wiper motors are a ceramic (glass-like) material. Use caution not to drop the motor.

REMOVAL

1. Turn the wiper switch on. Turn ignition switch to the RUN position. When the wiper blades are pointing up on the windshield, turn the ignition switch to OFF position. (Keep the blades pointing up)

2. Remove wiper arms.

3. Using a small punch, tap out the centers of the cowl grille retaining rivets.

4. Open the hood and remove the cowl grille.

5. Remove retaining clip from the wiper motor output arm and disconnect the pivot shaft.

6. Remove the cowl drain tube.

7. Remove the wiper motor-to-cowl panel retaining nuts. Remove the wiper motor.

8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the wiper motor.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Place the wiper motor on a bench.

2. While holding the motor output arm stationary, remove the wiper motor output arm retaining bolt and remove the output arm from the motor.

3. Remove wiper motor gasket.

CAUTION:
DO NOT SEND the park switch arm while the motor is disassembled.

4. Remove the five wiper motor gear cover retaining screws, gear cover and gears.

ASSEMBLY





1. Apply speedometer cable lubricant to the replacement input gear In the two locations shown (see Figure A).

2. Install the replacement input and output gears onto the motor mounting plate. Take care to position the output gear cam ramp 180 degrees (opposite) the park switch arm (see Figure A).

CAUTION:
Improper orientation of the output gear during assembly will bend the park switch arm resulting in a motor that will not park the wiper blades correctly.

3. Verify that the nylon thrust spider is seated properly in the motor gear cover.

4. Install the gear cover and check to see that the tip of the thrust spider sticks up through the gear cover and that the output shaft seal is fully pressed Into the output shaft bushing.

5. Install the gear cover retaining screws and tighten to 2-3 N-m (15-30 In.lb).

6. Install the motor gasket that seals the motor to the cowl.

CAUTION:
The motor gasket must be Installed as shown. (see figure A) Be careful not to tear the gasket.

7. Install the output arm on the motor.

8. Install the output arm retaining bolt and tighten to 17-22 N-m (150-200 In.lb.).

CAUTION:
Hold the output arm when tightening the retaining bolt so that the output shaft can not rotate. Rotation of the output shaft will cause internal damage to the wiper motor.

INSTALLATION

1. Connect the electrical connectors to the wiper motor.

2. Install the wiper motor into the cowl panel.

3. Install the wiper motor retaining nuts. Tighten to 7.8 N-m (60-65 In.lb).

4. Install pivot shaft to the wiper motor output arm.

5. Install the pivot shaft retaining clip.

6. Install the cowl drain tube.

7. Remove the used rivets from the cowl grille by cutting them off with an appropriate tool.

8. Close the hood.

9. Position the cowl grille onto the cowl.

10. Install new cowl grille-to-cowl rivets.

11. To park the wiper blades, turn the ignition switch and the wiper switch to the ON position. Let the wiper motor cycle, then turn the wiper switch and the ignition switch to the OFF position.

12. Install the wiper arms in the parked position.

Ford Motor Company is providing a no-charge Service Program, Number M72, to owners of all 1986, 1987 and 1988 Aerostar Vans and Wagons.

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM

The gears in the windshield wiper motor may break.

During severe cold weather the wiper blades may become frozen to the glass. If the wipers are turned on, the drive gears in the wiper motor may break.

NO COST SERVICE

Should you experience a wiper motor failure because of the above condition, your dealer will replace the gears within the wiper motor at no cost to you.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

The time needed for this service is about one hour. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your Aerostar for one full working day.

CALL YOUR DEALER

This service is available through April 1992. Ask for a service date and if parts are in stock.

If your dealer does not have the parts in stock, they can be ordered before scheduling your service date. Parts would be expected to arrive within a week.

When you bring your Aerostar in, give the dealer this letter.

If you misplace this letter, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.

REFUNDS

If you paid to have this service done before the date of this letter, Ford is offering a full refund. Refunds are available through April 1992. For the refund, please show your paid work-order to your Ford dealer.
