DISASSEMBLE

NOTE: When disassembling transmission and removing thrust washers, identify washers clearly. Some thrust washers are very similar and could be installed improperly during transmission assembly.

Exploded View Of A4LD Automatic Transmission, (Part 3 Of 3):

NOTE: Bolt Identification on the following pages In millimeters (mm) denotes wrench socket size to be used. It does not Identify thread size.

1. Remove torque converter, then the input shaft.

NOTE: the two splined ends are different.

2. Remove eighteen 13mm oil pan attaching bolts and oil pan, then the 10mm filter screen attaching bolt and screen and detent spring.

3. Disconnect two electrical wires at converter clutch solenoid, then the two wires from the 3-4 shift solenoid.

4. Remove valve body attaching, 25-10mm bolts and the valve body.

NOTE: There are four different lengths of bolts- 30mm, 35mm, 40mm and 45mm.

5. Remove Allen head retaining bolt that holds center support.

6. Remove six 17mm extension housing attaching bolts and the housing.

7. Remove parking pawl and return spring.

8. Remove two 10mm bolts and the governor.

9. Mount transmission in Bench Mount Holding Fixture T57L-500-B as shown. Two 10mm bolts, 50mm long will be required

10. Remove eight 17mm converter housing attaching bolts, then the housing, rotating and lifting so that clutches remain in place.
11. Remove No. 1 thrust washer and gasket, then the hydraulic pump oil seal using seal remover T74P-77248-A or equivalent.

12. Remove hydraulic pump from converter housing, then the steel plate with ring (behind oil seal).

13. Loosen overdrive band locknut and back off adjusting screw. Discard locknut.

14. Remove anchor and apply struts, then lift out overdrive clutch assembly and band. Place identification marks on band to aid in reassembly.

NOTE: Identify band as "overdrive" and either "apply" or "Anchor".

15. Lift out overdrive one-way clutch and planetary assembly.

16. Remove center support retaining snap ring.

17. Remove overdrive apply lever and shaft, then the overdrive control bracket from valve body side of case.

NOTE: Place identification marks on apply lever and shaft to aid in reassembly. The overdrive apply lever shaft is longer as compared to the intermediate apply lever shaft.

18. Remove thrust washer on top of center support.

NOTE: Place identification marks on washer to aid in reassembly.

19. Remove center support, carefully prying upward evenly.

20. Remove thrust washer below center support.

NOTE: Place identification marks on washer to aid in reassembly.

21. Loosen intermediate band locknut and back off adjusting screw. Discard locknut.
22. Rotate transmission 90° downward in holder.

23. Remove anchor and apply struts, then the reverse/high and forward clutch assembly.

24. Remove intermediate band.

NOTE: Place identification marks on band to aid in reassembly. Identify band as "intermediate" and identify which end is "apply" or "anchor" side for reinstallation purpose.

25. Remove forward planet assembly.

NOTE: Place identification marks on thrust washer or bearing to aid in reassembly. depending on application, some vehicles will have transmissions with aluminium planet carrier assemblies and some will have stamped steel planet carrier assemblies.

26. Remove sun gear shell, then the large snap ring from reverse planetary gear carrier.

NOTE: Transmission used with 4.0L engines do not use a snap ring at this location.

27. Remove reverse planet assembly.

NOTE: Place identification marks on identical thrust washers on both sides to aid in reassembly.

28. On models equipped with 4.0L engines, remove output shaft sleeve (lubricant guide).

29. On all models, remove small snap ring on output shaft, then the output shaft ring gear.

30. Remove low/reverse drum and one-way clutch assembly.

31. Remove low/reverse servo from valve body side of case.

32. Remove low reverse band, then the thrust washer.

NOTE: Inner race of rear one-way clutch is not removable from case. Neither is the reverse drum to case thrust washer on 4.0L models.

33. Remove intermediate apply lever and shaft.

NOTE: Place identification marks on apply lever and shaft to aid in reassembly. This apply lever has a boss on the shaft hole and the shaft is shorter than the other drive shaft. A control bracket is not used.

34. Turn transmission so that output shaft faces up, then remove output shaft by pulling upward.

35. Remove park gear/collector body assembly from rear of case, then the thrust washer.

NOTE: Place identification marks on washer to aid in reassembly.

36. Remove one 10 mm (M6 x 12mm long) bolt and retainer, then the vacuum diaphragm and throttle valve actuator rod.

37. Using magnet, verify that throttle valve moves freely in bore, then remove throttle valve.

38. Remove intermediate servo cover snap ring, then the overdrive servo cover snap ring. The transmission case is notched out to permit easy snap ring removal.

39. Remove intermediate servo cover, piston and spring, then the overdrive servo cover, piston and spring.

CAUTION: Covers may pop off due to spring pressure behind piston. Identify overdrive cover and piston and the intermediate cover and piston as incorrect installation may cause improper band operation due to pressure differences.

40. If servo covers cannot be removed by tapping lightly on cover or side of case, apply air pressure to release sides of pistons.

CAUTION: Air pressure should not be greater than 20 psi.

41. Using neutral start witch socket T74P-77247-A or equivalent, remove neutral start switch, (Thin wall socket). DO NOT USE AN OPEN END WRENCH TO AVOID SWITCH DAMAGE.

Removing Kickdown Lever Nut, Lever, And 0-Ring Seal:

42. Remove kickdown lever nut, lever, and O-ring seal.

Removing Linkage Centering Pin:

43. Remove linkage centering pin, using care not to damage case flange.

44. Remove 7/8 inch (13mm) nut, manual lever, internal kickdown lever and park pawl rod, and the detent plate assembly.

Removing Shaft Lever Oil Seal:

45. Remove shaft lever oil seal.

Removing Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Connector:

46. Remove torque converter clutch solenoid connector, if necessary. A tab on outside of case on backside of connector must be depressed while pulling with pliers.

NOTE: The tab is depressed with a small pair of locking pliers. Connector need not be removed unless it is to be replaced or case is to be immersed in degreaser.
