Engine: Service and Repair

F-100---350 & Bronco
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system and engine oil.
2. Mark hood hinge locations and remove hood.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly, then, on models equipped with A/C, the A/C compressor and condenser. On EFI models, relieve fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Locate, then disconnect either fuel pump, inertia switch or inline high pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
b. Crank engine for approximately ten seconds. Engine may start and operate for a short time. If so, crank engine an additional five seconds after engine stalls.
c. Connect electrical connector disconnected in step a.
4. Disconnect heater hose from water pump and coolant outlet housing.
5. Disconnect flexible fuel line from fuel pump, then remove radiator.
6. Remove cooling fan, viscous fan drive (if equipped), water pump pulley and fan drive belt.
7. Disconnect accelerator cable, and the choke cable on 1980 models, from carburetor and remove cable retracting spring.
8. On models equipped with power brakes, disconnect vacuum line from intake manifold.
9. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect kickdown rod or throttle valve cable from bell crank.
10. On all models, disconnect exhaust manifold from exhaust pipe. Label, then disconnect all EFI (if equipped) electrical connectors and vacuum lines that will interfere with engine removal.
11. Disconnect battery ground cable and body ground strap from engine.
12. Disconnect electronic engine control harness from all sensors, if equipped.
13. Disconnect engine wiring harness from ignition coil and the coolant temperature and oil pressure sending units, and position harness aside.
14. Disconnect alternator from mounting bracket and position aside, leaving wires attached.
15. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect steering pump from mounting bracket and position aside, leaving lines attached.
16. On models equipped with an air compressor, bleed air system and disconnect pressure lines from compressor.
17. On all models, raise and support vehicle.
18. Remove starter motor, and on models equipped with automatic transmission, the fluid filler tube bracket.
19. Remove engine rear plate upper right bolt.
20. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove all flywheel housing lower attaching bolts and disconnect clutch retracting spring.
21. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter housing access cover, then the flywheel-to-converter nuts, and secure converter in housing. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from retaining clip on engine, then remove converter housing-to-engine lower attaching bolts.
22. Remove insulator-to-intermediate support bracket attaching nut from each engine front support.
23. Lower vehicle and support transmission using a suitable jack.
24. Remove remaining flywheel or converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
25. Raise engine slightly, using suitable lifting equipment, and carefully separate from transmission, then lift engine from vehicle.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
