Engine: Service and Repair

F-100-250 & Bronco
1. Drain cooling system and engine oil.
2. On 1981-87 models, mark hood hinge locations and remove hood.
3. On all models, disconnect battery and ground cables from engine block. On EFI engines, label, then disconnect all EFI related component electrical connectors, vacuum lines and fuel lines that may interfere with engine removal. Relieve system pressure as follows:
a. Locate, then disconnect either fuel pump, inertia switch or inline high pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
b. Crank engine for approximately ten seconds. Engine may start and operate for a short time. If so, crank engine an additional five seconds after engine stalls.
c. Connect electrical connector disconnected in step a.
4. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly, including carbon canister hose and crankcase ventilation hose.
5. Disconnect upper and lower hoses and transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped) from radiator.
6. On models equipped with A/C, discharge refrigerant from system, then remove A/C condenser and disconnect lines from compressor.
7. On all models, remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan.
8. Remove radiator, fan shroud, fan spacer, belts and pulley.
9. Remove alternator attaching bolts and swing alternator aside.
10. Disconnect electrical connector from oil pressure sending unit, then disconnect and plug flexible fuel line at fuel tank.
11. Disconnect vacuum hoses from evaporative canister.
12. On fuel injected models, disconnect chassis fuel line quick disconnects at fuel rail.
13. On all models, disconnect accelerator rod or cable from carburetor or throttle body.
14. Disconnect speed control linkages and transmission kickdown rod and remove rod retracting spring, if equipped.
15. Disconnect power brake booster vacuum hose, if equipped.
16. Disconnect heater hoses from water pump and intake manifold.
17. Disconnect electrical connector from coolant temperature sending unit.
18. Remove flywheel housing-to-engine upper attaching bolts.
19. Disconnect primary wire from ignition coil, then remove wiring harness from left rocker arm cover and position aside.
20. Disconnect ground strap from cylinder head.
21. Raise and support vehicle.
22. Remove starter motor.
23. Disconnect exhaust pipes and exhaust heat control valve (if equipped) from exhaust manifolds.
24. Disconnect engine support insulators from frame brackets.
25. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter inspection plate and the converter-to-flywheel attaching bolts.
26. On all models, remove remaining flywheel housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
27. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor clutch electrical connector.
28. On all models, lower vehicle and support transmission with a suitable jack.
29. Install lifting brackets to intake manifold and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
30. Raise engine slightly and carefully separate from transmission, then lift engine from vehicle.
31. Reverse procedure to install.
