Assemble
1. Install overdrive shift control link and pin assembly into case, ensuring square shouldered pin is positioned toward bottom of case.2. Apply suitable lubricant to reverse idler bronze thrust washers, then install washers in case, aligning tabs on washers with slots in case.
3. Apply suitable lubricant to reverse idler gear shaft needle bearings, then install two rows of 22 bearings in reverse idler gear. Retain bearings with a washer on each end of gear.
4. Install reverse idler sliding gear onto reverse idler gear, ensuring grooved portion of gear faces front of transmission case.
5. Lower reverse idler gear and sliding gear into case.
6. Install reverse idler gear shaft through sliding gear and reverse idler gear assembly and thrust washers. Ensure roll pin in end of shaft faces rear of case.
7. Apply suitable lubricant to countershaft nylon thrust washers, then install washers in case.
8. Apply suitable lubricant to countershaft needle bearings, then install two rows of 21 bearings into countershaft gear. Install dummy shaft No. T64P-7111-A or equivalent into countershaft gear, then install washers on each end of gear to retain bearings.
9. Lower countershaft to bottom of case.
NOTE: The countershaft gear must be at bottom of case with countershaft removed to provide sufficient clearance to install input shaft and output shaft and geartrain assembly.
10. Position rear of output shaft and geartrain through rear bearing bore in case and tilt assembly until it can be installed in case.
11. Install 3rd-4th shift fork with slot facing down. Align fork pads with 3rd-4th synchronizer assembly and slotted groove with overdrive shift control link and pin assembly.
12. Install 15 needle bearings into input shaft bearing bore. Apply suitable lubricant to bearings.
13. Install blocking ring in intermediate and high clutch hub and sleeve on output shaft and geartrain.
14. Install input shaft, then move shaft into position on output shaft and geartrain. Align slots in blocking ring with inserts on sleeve.
Input Shaft Front Bearing Installation:
15. Install input shaft front bearing, then the bearing retaining ring and snap rings.
16. Apply suitable sealer to transmission case and input bearing retainer mating surfaces, then position retainer on case, with slot in retainer facing bottom of case. Apply suitable sealer to retainer attaching bolts, then install bolts and torque to 12-16 ft lbs (16-21 Nm).
Output Shaft Rear Bearing Installation:
17. Install output shaft rear bearing, then the bearing snap rings.
18. Install speedometer drive gear lock ball, then the speedometer drive gear and snap ring.
19. Lift countershaft gear assembly, with dummy shaft inside, into position in case.
20. Position countershaft in rear of case, then drive countershaft into case while removing dummy shaft.
Extension Housing Attaching Bolt Tightening Sequence:
21. Apply suitable sealer to extension housing mating surface. Install extension housing attaching bolts and tighten all at least two full turns. Torque bolts to 42-50 ft lbs (56-67 Nm) in sequence shown in image.
22. Install 3rd-4th shift rail through front of case, then drive roll pin through shift fork.
23. Drive welch plug into 3rd-4th shift rail bore in case. Ensure plug does not protrude above front face of case, or recess more than 0.006 inch below front face of case.
24. Place transmission and gearshift housing assembly in 2nd gear position, ensuring reverse idler gear is positioned rearward.
25. Install gearshift housing assembly on transmission case. Torque attaching bolts to 18-22 ft lbs (24-29 Nm).
NOTE: When the gearshift housing is properly installed, the 3rd-overdrive shift pawl engages the rounded portion of the overdrive shift control link and pin assembly, the reverse fork engages the reverse idler sliding gear and the 1st-2nd shift fork engages the 1st-2nd synchronizer assembly.
26. Install transmission shift lever.
27. Remove fill plug, then add 4.5 pints of suitable transmission fluid to case and reinstall fill plug.
