Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Scribe hood hinge locations and remove hood from vehicle.
3. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
4. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from radiator.
5. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan.
6. Remove radiator and fan shroud.
7. Remove alternator and bracket, and position aside. Disconnect alternator ground wire from engine.
8. If equipped, disconnect A/C compressor and/or power steering pump from mounting bracket and position aside.
9. Disconnect heater hoses from cylinder block and water pump.
10. Disconnect or remove Thermactor system components interfering with engine removal, if necessary.
11. Disconnect ground wires from cylinder block.
12. On models equipped with V6-171 engine, disconnect and plug fuel pump feed line at fuel pump.
13. On models equipped with V6-179 engine, disconnect fuel tank to fuel rail fuel line at the fuel rail.
14. On models equipped with V6-171 engine, disconnect throttle cable linkage from carburetor and intake manifold.
15. On models equipped with V6-179 engine, disconnect throttle cable shield and linkage at throttle body and intake manifold, and all vacuum hoses from front and rear vacuum fittings at manifold.
16. On all models, disconnect primary wires from ignition coil, then the brake booster vacuum line.
17. Disconnect oil pressure sender, engine coolant temperature sender, injector harness, air charge temperature sensor, throttle position sensor and EGR pressure sensor electrical connections, as applicable.
18. Raise and support vehicle.
19. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
20. Remove starter motor.
21. Remove engine front mount-to-crossmember attaching nuts or through bolts.
22. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter inspection cover, then disconnect flywheel from converter. Remove kickdown rod or cable, then the converter housing-to-cylinder block attaching bolts and adapter plate-to-converter housing bolt. Lower vehicle.
23. On 1983---84 vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch linkage, then lower the vehicle.
24. On 1985---87 vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch housing attaching bolts, then the hydraulic clutch hose.
25. On all models, attach suitable engine lifting equipment to brackets at exhaust manifolds and support transmission with a suitable jack, then carefully lift engine from vehicle.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
