1. Remove engine cover, then disconnect battery cables and drain cooling system.
2. Remove grille assembly, including gravel deflector.
3. Remove upper grille support bracket, hood lock support and condenser upper mounting brackets, if equipped.
4. On models equipped with A/C, discharge refrigerant from system and remove condenser. Disconnect lines from A/C compressor and remove accelerator cable bracket. On EFI models, relieve fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Locate, then disconnect either fuel pump, inertia switch or inline high pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
b. Crank engine for approximately ten seconds. Engine may start and operate for a short time. If so, crank engine an additional five seconds after engine stalls.
c. Connect electrical connector disconnected in step a.
5. Disconnect speed control linkage, if equipped.
6. On all models, disconnect heater hoses from engine and radiator hoses from radiator.
7. On 1983---87 models, disconnect heater hoses from heater core and water valve.
8. On all models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect oil cooler lines from radiator.
9. Remove fan shroud, fan and radiator, then pivot alternator inward and disconnect electrical connectors from alternator.
10. Remove air cleaner, duct and valve assembly and exhaust manifold shroud, then the flex tube from exhaust manifold stove.
11. Disconnect throttle cable from carburetor or throttle body assembly, then remove accelerator cable bracket from engine. On EFI models, label, then disconnect all EFI electrical connectors and vacuum lines.
12. Disconnect transmission shift rod, if equipped.
13. Disconnect fuel and choke lines, then remove carburetor and spacer.
14. Disconnect evaporative emission hoses from front of carburetor pad and/or top of PCV valve. Disconnect vacuum line from carburetor bowl vent and evaporative canister line from vacuum harness. If equipped, also disconnect power brake booster vacuum line.
15. Raise and support vehicle.
16. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipes and exhaust heat control valve (if equipped) from exhaust manifolds.
18. Remove 2 transmission filler tube bracket attaching bolts from right cylinder head.
19. Remove engine mount attaching bolts and nuts, then the starter motor.
20. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
21. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter inspection cover attaching bolts. Remove 4 converter-to-flexplate nuts, 3 adapter plate-to-converter housing bolts and 4 converter housing-to-cylinder block lower bolts.
22. On all models, remove ground wire retaining bolt from cylinder block, then lower the vehicle and support transmission with a suitable jack.
23. On models equipped with power steering, remove steering pump drive belt and front bracket bolts.
24. On 1980---82 models, remove speed control servo (if equipped) and accelerator cable bracket from intake manifold and position aside.
25. On all models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor magnetic clutch lead wire.
26. On all models, install lifting bracket to intake manifold and remove 2 converter housing-to-cylinder block upper attaching bolts.
27. Support transmission with a suitable jack and attach lifting equipment to engine, then carefully move engine forward and lift from vehicle.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
